David Prowse, known in the UK by those of us of a certain age as the Green Cross code man, but best known around the world as the man behind Darth vaders mask, has died age 85.
On the news this morning they showed a couple of clips from Star Wars before Darth was dudded over. I am so glad they did, Darth does not sound the same with a Bristol accent.
It was a road saftey campaign in the UK which is still going, though without the Green Cross Code man. In the 70’s we had these adverts on TV. When the UK goverment found out about david playing darth vader, he nearly got the sack as the green Cross Code man because they didn’t think his role as vader was appropiate to be teaching children road asaftey. Of course back then i don’t think us kids realied they were one and the same.
I saw him in Hammer’s 1972 ‘Vampire Circus’ not too long ago as the circus strongman. He spent most of the movie bare-chested in a pair of wrestling trunks and boots. Dang he was a BIG beefy guy!!!
Sad to see him go, we’re losing all the great old actors. Guess it’s kinda sad, I’d way rather watch older films than the stuff made these days.
