making putty from styrene and cement

i’ve been making filler by shaving some spare sprues into a container and melting them down with proweld. works pretty well but the inside always comes out porous. now i made some more, used what i needed and closed it up in a small plastic container. it sat there for a while and then the top actually popped off on its own. i guess the proweld is a lot more active then i gave it credit for. anyone get decent results with another type of cement? maybe something slower acting but that doesn’t end up with the interior of the filled area looking like a sponge?

I had a similar experience with Woody’s formula, using Weld-on #3. Not quite as hot a glue(no lids popping off) but had the same effect building the stuff up. Air pockets seem to creep up. It really is only good for a thin application, but does work good at that. For thicker needs try epoxy putty like Magicsculp or Aves.

I’ve done this with Tamiya Super Thin, no bubbling at all, smooth as silk.

I just tried it a couple of days ago with acetone instead of glue, seems to work great.

i’ve tried this method with regular ol’ testors in the Orahge tube & some stuff called Zap glue. had fairly decent results with both. Just yesterday I helped fix the arm on a rocking chair & used Gorilla glue & sawdust to fill in the gaps.[:)]
