Making fine dust?

i did a google search and didn’t turn up any really helpfull or specific results for my questoin so here it is.

I have a test model (just got a AB, all good so far) that i want to try for the first time adding fine dust, maby a thin layer of dryed mud. The color i want is the classic yellowish color.

What i’m looking for doesn’t need to be perfect, but what i(and proably many others) want is a fairly simply method for this. I am not a fan of the extreme weathering and want my models to look in good condition but used.

My main question is can i airbrush on tamiya acrylic desert yellow to give it this fine coat?

Is there any other method that will yeld good results but not be a big pain?

And do you have some tips on how to improve the restulst?

Thanks for any help you guys can offer.

How’s she goin’

What you want to do is swap the Tamiya Desert Yellow and use Buff from the same series. It is less yellow in tint. Works great!

Cheers;

Gregory

Ok, thanks for that tip. I will try both (on the hull of a revell PT boat that has a good 10 layers of 8 differnt color paints), but i think you are right.

Go to the model railroad side of the hobby shop and look for Floquil or PollyScale Dust in the railroad paint racks (Floquil and Pollyscale are both products of Testors). Dust is not a “color” paint – it is a flat paint with just a hint of color which looks like road dirt. Dilute as necessary for your airbrush and shoot a light coat on the lower third of the model as part of your basic weathering. Dust tends to bring the weathering colors together into a more subtle effect

Can’t get tamiya buff, forgot to get desert yellow (thoght i already had it, or the carpet grliems are getting more active) so i used earth brown.

This is a link to the post i made in the armor fourm.
