making brass hinges

anyone have any resources on making hatch hinges out of brass sheet? i’ve got a general idea but was wondering if there’s a good way i’m not aware of.

you may also want to try "non workable " plastic hinges out of basic plastic rod /sheet stock , which are much easier to pull off ,I used the stock on my last project and I would say its the way to go from now on , and as most brass hinges are fragile anyhow , you may get 5 open /closes before the thing falls apart anyhow .

Or go the ABER hinge route , I think they sell stock hinge kits applicable to almost any 1/35 vehicle with little mods .

i meant fixed ‘fake’ hinges, i don’t actually want them to work. [:)]

Go with the plastic rod/ strip styrene ( evergreen is what I use ) method , its quicker and looks better when finished , I scoffed at it before , now I use the stuff exclusively .

Buy an xacto flat chisel blade , it will be your best friend here .

Good luck !

Here are some from my latest project an E 100 custom turret double door .

If you have the ability to locate a copy of the Fall 1983 Issue of FSM on page 33 Steve Zaloga has a diagram of how to make hinges from shim brass. It is in the article "Superdetailing armor models". I have a copy, however I can not scan a copy for you (Copyright infringement) however, I am sure there is a possibility of obtaining a copy from the FSM of just the article. If they are unable to provide you a copy, I will attempt to describe how to do this.

Take your sheet of brass. Once you know the dimension length of the hinge you want you will need to make two pieces to complete it. Draw a RECTANGULAR ‘O’ shape (Female piece) Then draw a Rectangular ‘I’ shape (Male piece). The I shape is rolled over a piece of round stock to create the insert piece of the hinge. Then the O shape is rolled over to complete the hinge. It is much easier to understand with the picture.

Maybe the Powers That Be will allow a scan if you can’t obtain a copy as the article is fairly old, however still very relevant.

Cheers;
