Making Aerial Markings for Tanks?

Hi Guys,

I have just seen a lovely grainy colour picture in a book of an early StuG III like the one I’m starting work on tomorrow.

At the rear on the flat deck was some stowage but draped over this was a large Swastika flag for ariel recognition.

I’ve seen these before and would like to at least try at making one before I admit defeat and buy something for the job.

I recall a recent magazine article where the author had done this. He had used Milliput rolled very thinly and hadput creases and curves into the flag before painting it with a Swastika. I think I’d roll mine out and get a template for the white circle and Swastika prepared then paint it lightly while it was still pliable and then fit to the tank and repaint later when it was fully cured and set in place.

Have any of you done this before? Is there a better or easier way of doing this?

Many thanks,

Milliput may be more difficult to work with than lead foil. Cut to size, form over the rear deck, remove and paint starting with a flat white primer.

Mask the white circle area and probably the black will be easiest to hand paint or use a decal. The fewer creases the easier this will be, keep the folds on the red part while keeping the white circle spread out nice with just a few wrinkles.

Hello!

What also works is tissue and white glue. You might also try teabag tissue instead (more durable, moisture resistant) or Pawelite (layer of aluminium foil between two layers of tissue) for larger scales - it holds the folds and creases very well.

By the way its “aerial” - correcting it would help knowing what this thread is all about.

Good luck with your project and have a nice day

Archer Fine Transfers might be a help to you?..cheers…Kenny

I once used a gum wrapper. Easy to cut to any small flag size, easy to mask, and holds paint real well. Plus, you can lay it flat when painting it and lay it on the tank however and whenever you want without fussing over touching up its paint.

Thanks Pawel,

I’ll change that. I have no idea why I mispelled that. That’s pretty basic [:$]

I’ll see what crops up during the build but the tissue paper idea might be a way forward.
