making a small clear window - airplane

My kit (esci tu-22) (same as Italarie) is missing 2 small windows.

what might be the best course of action to make some?

on the web, Plastruct has .01" thick clear styrene. would probably require sandwishing several pieces.

suggestions? it’s my first time with this problem.

thanks,

B

If they are small windows on a flat panel, try Microscale Kristal Klear. It’s a liquid very similar to white glue and is specificaly designed for this purpose. Just dip a toothpick (or similar) in this stuff, run it around the edge of the opening and allow it to form a film over it.

Details here

they do have a bit of curvature, but its not much. worth looking for at the LHS.

did a search and found a good thread on the problem

I decide to try:

taped a piece of .01 styrene around the outside of the window cutout on the fuse, styrene has a light coat of vaseline on it.

turn fuse up, and put some clear gel Aleene’s glue in the window cutouts. This might work, and if looks ok, will brush some future over it to help protect it while the model gets built.

in the 2nd half of the fuse, I have a 2nd experiment going on… same piece of styrene taped to outside, and rock-hard putty filled into the window cutouts. will pop these out and.if they dont break when doing so…well maybe these can be a template, or ? …lol dunno just yet

I’ve found that Testors Clear Parts Cement also works on small windows, even ones with a curvature, when applied as described above. Bear in mind that I build in 1/72 and 1/144, though, so I’m not sure how good that would work in larger scales. The best thing about using it, though, is if you mess up you can just wait for it to dry and then peel it off for a do-over!

I did them using small pieces of clear plastic from a package, and the testors cement.

heat gun and a dowel-form gave me the curvature needed.

they are “ok” not real clear, but all in all better than buying another kit just for a 1/4 x 3/8" window!

thanks for the reply!
