Magnetic desktop

I have a magnetic sign people use to advertise generally stuck on a driver door. I use it as a cutting surface, the back side, and its pretty good at keeping my metal tools and parts from rolling onto the floor. Its an old sign the printer didnt want. no i didnt snitch it from a realtor.

That’s a great idea John! I’m going to look into this. Thanks for the tip.

The only thing I’d think of, is whether the magnetic field is strong enough to cause any problems with digital devices, like a smart phone, if you were to lay the device on your bench. Maybe not, and certainly not strong enough if it’s in your pocket while sit at the bench. But I’d make sure not to lay mine on the bench.

Many phones, including iPhones, utilize magnetic cases for charging. They grab a lot harder than any magnetic sign I’ve run across.

Phones are designed to withstand emp from a nuclear attack. the phone will be ok but…

I’d be more concerned about keeping a little microwave transmitter in close proximity to my body all the time.

I’m not clear, are we saying that a rubber magnetic mat can cause a health hazard, not sure I’ve heard of that, can we clarify?

If that question is directed at me, I was referring to the phones some seemed to be concerned about getting messed with by the magnetic matt. The magnetic matts are harmless…its having a phone (little microwave transmitter) near me all the time that I’d be most concerned about. I personally don’t see a need for having my phone with me when I’m working on models, mostly because modeling time for me is a chance to get away from the electronic leash, but that’s just my preference. I thought the talk was about the mat, didnt make sense, okay.

Sometimes I stream a radio station using my phone while at the bench

Heh…I thought it was too, until the subject of phones came up.

I’ll have a wired LAN-connected TV down in my new workshop, along with my old JVC mini system. I can just run movies, TV shows, and music from my Plex server.

Finally got power run over to the bench today, so I think tomorrow I’ll be back to being able to build again. I think its been 2 months since the last time I was able to get any building done

If you still use floppy disks, do not put them on top of a magnetic surface or risk turning what ever data you have in them into back beans soup!
