Almost ready for paint…I put up a pic of just the hull and running gear about a year ago, had this one shelved, but finally gathered my gall and continued.
The Legends conversion’s price was a no-go, so I’m scratching and bashing and gizmology-ing till I’m blue in the face. It’s been fun but getting a little anxious to get some paint on.

WOW RBaer, that is fantastic looking!! The amount of work you put into this is mind-boggling! Its going to look awesome all painted up! Did you use Magic Sculpt or something similar for the foam rolls and “canvas” (?) on the turret bustle?

The putty I used is Aves, for the bustle rack cover, ID panels, and sleeping mats. There’s also a rolled-up map holder in front of the commander’s cupola made from a piece left over from the portion I rolled out for the bustle cover. I found several examples of the bustle cover in pics, anywhere from a one-piece hunk of rubberized canvas to the multi-parts affair I’ve tried to replicate.
Also, I’m glad the foam rolls are recognizable as such. I tried to figure a way to have them shoved in between the turret side rails and turret ERA, but quickly determined that I should have done that before I put the rails on. Hmmm…
This one has been a lot of fun, with some serious head-scratching going on as well.Most of the base kit is Revell (Esci?) and Academy,but I robbed a few parts fom the Academy kit last year to do a -6C, so I’m forced to make some things from bits and pieces, in particular the loader’s MG mount. But, since the Legends conversion for the “Gal” is almost $200, this was the only way I was going to build it, and I think I’m having more fun. Granted my pieces are probably a bit simplified and out-of-scale, but I think I have the essence of the thing, and it’s doubtful anyone other than you guys (and of course me) will ever see it.
Next on the list (basic hull already started) in a very clean -6B from early in the Peace for Galilee operation, with nothing at all on the mantlet, and some missing ERA blocks. I’ll probably have to finish a Sherman sometime in there…
I kind of feel the same way about painting something like this, it’s almost a shame to lose the impact of all the different materials, and I frequently find the first shot of primer to be slightly traumatic…but paint I must! Wasn’t there a thread here a while ago about just clear-coating a multi-media model, just for the heck of it? For right now I’m holding off on primer, mainly to be sure I’ve actually got everything on that I want to have on before I paint. Suggestions are very welcome, thanks for looking.
[dto:] I hear you there! One of my best friends does amazing work on Warhammer 40k figurines, in 28mm. He uses green stuff ( an epoxy putty) to sculpt so much detail into the figs, they often don’t look much like the original. So you have this piece of pewter, plastic bits, and all this amazing putty work.
I also felt a bit guilty shooting primer onto a model he had converted for me, it was like hiding his artistry. But in the end, the mini looks great, an people ooh and aah over it all the time.
I am sure this build will be the same or you when you finally paint it up! Nice work!

I’ve started saving some of the pics I take of the un-painted models, just as a reminder of what went in to them. Hopefully the painted model will reflect the extra work.

I did the basket for catching the spent -50 shells, and shot the primer yesterday, but we loaned the camera out to a food writer Saturday, so pics to come later. The shell basket was a good story, I’ll save it for the pics.

This is the part where I get panic-ey, the paint. I’m probably going with a mustard-tan, looks to be the closest match in the best color shots I have.
As soon as I get my camera back I’ll get some pics.

Here’s a couple of the primered model, and the first wash. Primer is Krylon, wash is heavy acrylic dark green. After the wash cures, it’ll get a light coat of MM SAC tan, then gloss. After that, more washes, pigments, salt and pepper.

So the green is just a wash, not sprayed? Interesting technique.
Right. It’s probably 30% paint, 70% alcohol. I used to fog a coat of the SAC green on first, then the tan while the green was still wet, to get a similar effect. I want the tan to have a greenish tint, kind of like pre-shading, I guess. If I felt like making room in the man-cave for an airbrush and spray booth, I’d use the green in recessed areas only, but I’m a Luddite, I guess…
My problem is that since I use ratle cans or a brush, it’s hard to put the tan on light enough to leave the green “visible” and still get a smooth coat on.

And color. It’s the SAC bomber tan, MM rattle can, with clear gloss. The color came out a little less gray/green than I’d hoped, so I’m trying to decide whether or not to try a gray “filter” wash or go ahead and do the pin wash. This color is very close to the color pics I have, both in the Desert Eagle book and a couple I took myself.
I have two with flash, one without. It’s an interesting color…
