What exactly is a “Mae West” and why is it called this?

A Mae West is an inflatable life jacket worn by pilots when operating over large areas of water or where a water landing is possible. And they’re called a Mae West because when inflated the person wearing it looked like Mae West, the actress, in the chest area.
Just watch a film with Mae West in and then compare her stupendous front end with the way an inflated “Mae West” looks and it’s self explanatory!!! Boy was she stacked!!!
