I’d like some input as to what is the best thing to use for barrels in 1/72 and 1/48 scale. I’ll probably need replacements for .30 cal., .50 cal, 20mm and possibly 30mm. Any suggestions will be welcome. I just need to replace the parts that actually extend from the leading edge. Most of the kits seem to have oval barrels and it’s really noticeable on some. I tried drilling a couple out but I’m afraid my skill with a pin vise just isn’t that good.
Go here: scale tubing post.
Thanks, Ross. This is what I was looking for.
Good info, just happen to “surf” in on this subject. A question though, how do you cut this small tubing without crushing it?
Carl
I use an abrasive cutting disk in a flexible shaft tool. Make sure you have something holding the piece you are cutting off! The disk is also good for cleaning up and rounding the ends.
And wear eye protection, if you don’t have both sides taped securely, they will fly off. Oh, and the metal tubes can be quite hot, give it a few seconds to cool down first. Ask me how I know!
How do you know? LOL!
I sometimes use a hand saw with a very very finely serrated blade on tubeing.
Thanks, Triarius. Looks like the Dremal is the tool to use.
Yep, eye protection is always a must. Never thought about the tape, great idea!

I just wanted to tell you, Ross, that that post is a true lifesaver.
The .50 cals that come with the 1/32 hasegawa hellcat are way too short in the barrel and I was wondering what the heck I was going to do to replace them. Since I decided to display the gun bays open, I couldn’t seperate the barrels from the receiver.
I wonder if it would be possible to drill the cooling holes in pipe this small [:-^]…
Thanks for that post, Ross!

In 1/32, it might be possible to grind them or cut them, but even if you did, it would be very difficult to keep the pattern regular. If I ever come up with something that works, I’ll post it in the scratchbuilding forum. [banghead]
And you’re welcome!
