well this is my next project to do. was looking over it last night and was wondering what are the under sides painted? like the engine, tranny and all frame parts of the truck. i know they probally get just like a regular truck oily and grimy and ditry. just curious if any body else had buil one of hese yet.[:D][:D]
Frame is camo color as far as I recall. Can’t help you with engine color, perhaps one of our full timers could go out to the motor pool and take a look!

The entire body is painted the base color (medium or dark green) or if you are really lucky, it will come from the factory in all desert tan. Engines are kinda hidden by the engine cover (behind the cab) and I don’t remember off hand how they were painted or not. Its been awhile since I’ve been on one.
Maybe MAJ G could shed some light on this for everybody.
A wise old pilot once told me that its better to be on the ground, wishing that you were in the air, then in the air, wishing you were on the ground…
You can’t see the engine on either of the Hemtt Kits. Once you mount the muffler and cargo or fuel tank, it’s gone. This raises the topic we discussed last week, “do you need to detail it is you can’t see it?” I’ve built both. The instrustion sheets provide only basic painting and there really is no engine detail to begin with.
I was attatched to a service battery for a while and we had the PLS which is just a bigger better version, they all are more or less done up the same way, for tamiya colors use nato green and thats about it, no camo underneath just green and lots of slime.
these trucks have a blowby hose that sticks out for eccess oil and slime to come out of the engine, we always had to use dry sweep!
thanks guys that makes it real simple then all painting is going to be amor sand.[:D][:D]
Have you checked out the aftermarket tires for it yet? I believe there’s a resin set being produced that has the correct tread pattern. I wish I’d have picked up the photo etch sets for the 2 I did but, too late now. I’m sure everyone would like to see pics when your done. There aren’t many Hemtt pics around.
pathfinder, don’t forget that we still use just about every tire tread pattern for our vehicles, my last PLS last year had 3 different patterns on it’s tires.
Just a thought ( scary huh?). Wouldn’t the engine be white, like the M-109’s had?
Underside and frame are forest green. These vehicles were manufactured in NAT0 3-color and repainted desert sand at the installation they were sent to. The underside isn’t repainted. Engines are OD green, usually very dirty like any truck engine. Definitely not white (that color is usually a tank or SP gun’s pack color).
Just got done in the engine compartment the other day and the engine is like a pale green but maybe a little darker. Hope that helps you out.
