Welcome to FSM! [:)]
Just did a quick Google search for “M4E8,” but every entry labeled “M4E8” was actually an M4A3E8, and not what you’re looking for. Sorry!

There is a photo of one in the Hunnicutt Sherman book. I’ll see if I can locate it tonight.

I know .I been looking of the web for the last 4 or 5 days and ever one I found was the latter[:(]But thaks for trying.

Thank you !!!

There are two photos of one on page 243. The accompanying paragraph states, “The pilot vehicles were designated as the medium tank M4E8 when based on the M4. This changed to the M4A1E8, M4A2E8, or M4A3E8 when other tank models were used.”

So the M4E8 was a regular 75mm M4 with HVSS.

With a 76mm gun in the M34A1 mount?

The photos of the M4E8 had a regular 75mm gun in the 75mm turret. Check out this site for photos of some M4A3 tanks with 76mm guns in the 75mm turret: http://web.inter.nl.net/users/spoelstra/g104/ Click on the “subjects” link in the left hand menu. Very good site to book mark for Sherman fans.

The 76mm in a 75 mm turret was a quick way to up gun Shermans destined for Korea. The 75mm was not effective as an anti-tank weapon and the 76mm was needed to defeat the T-34/85 tanks.

Thanks again to all.
