I’m sure it saves Tamiya some tooling cost. Besides I use wire to replace them anyway.

Here is a little more. I think I’m about ready to apply the markings.

Graphite will work and look better than a silver pencil. If you want that steel appearance to be more silver, use steel paint then graphite over it. Cheers! Ron
The only silver used was on the tools and only enough to highlight the details, but thanks for the advise.
