M274 mule questions.

For my first build in many years I am going to do something relatively easy…ha ha nothing that small is easy. A mule with the 106MM RR. But I wanted to do something interesting. On the cover of the model it shows it firing through the opening were the gate was in a fence during the battle of Hue.

So I came up with a battle of Hue diorama. I studied pictures and even a Youtube of an Ontos firing during that battle. I have a picture of Marines hiding behind a wall and I thought I would put both together. So the Mule is firing through the gate and all those marines will be behind the fence/wall.

I cannot find a proper picture of the Mule actually firing the M40A1 RR. My best guess is that they fired it with the barrel swung around and the muzzle facing out from the drivers side on a 90% angle to the vehicle. That makes the most sense. On jeeps they fired it forward.

Does anybody know or have a picture of a Mule firing it’s RR?

Also the color and texture of the RR itself, I have seen some really good work on that as it was parkerized and faded a lot in Vietnam. So if anybody would like to share some techniques I would appreciate it immensely.

I was watching the series “The Pacific” and it got me thinking of doing the diorama with the Mule as the center piece. The whole idea is that it drove up and blasted the enemy emplacement with a few beehive/ fleshette and some HEAT rounds. Allowing the Marines to do what they do best, charge into firing machine guns…ONLY kidding if there are any Marines reading this. Honestly I wished the Army had been more like the Marines, but that’s another story.

So any help on this or anything concerning the mule, the weapon or even the Marines would be great. I did get the correct M-16s with the early model flash hiders, not the birdcage and I am studying their gear. The stuff I used in my army time was similar. I have tons of pictures off the internet and am studying them very closely.

I’m very nervous about this as it will be my first attempt not only that it’s been a while but also that I want it to be as close to real as possible. No mistakes about equipment and tactics. Although there is room for poetic license I still want it to be professional looking and the word used so often now just POP!!! Like a Spielberg battle scene…[:D]

Thanks for any help guys. Doog’s M48A3 has been an inspiration to get it right and do it right. I wont accept anything but amazing even if it takes me a year to finish it…gee I hope not.[:|]

Never had a mule with a 106 on it, but I have raced them around a warehouse compound a lot. Get to tinkering with the little thing and you can get crosseyed fast.

You’d actually be surprised at what what you’d get by googling as well.

If only I could work out to insert photos on this forum!

Great pix, thanks a bunch man…

One pic of them firing the mule and I have it backward. They fired the weapon with the muzzle pointed away from the diver. Which in retrospect makes sense. I was thinking that would have been easier to put the barrel into action after I posted the question.

But great pix of Hue city and with some other pix I have supports my concept pretty well. I just have to execute the whole thing.

Here is a picture for you

Rounds Complete!!

The breech is open do you think they just fired it? It looks more like it’s in a rear area and they were showing it to an ARVN officer on the left.

I don’t think so…no dunnage or ammo in the area…most likely maintenance…time to clean the weapon!!
