I was wondering, can the M1a1/2 commander’s hatch rotate? or is it in a fixed position. In other worrds, can the 50 cal. rotate 360 degrees?
Thanks

The Commander’s Cupola can rotate through a full 360 degrees. So yes, M2 HB .50 cal can point in any direction.
You know, I don’t know about the M1A2. Is it a skate mount, or is it fixed to the cupola?

So, on the M1A1 the commander’s cupola (50 cal.) can rotate 360 degrees, like on the M1A2?
You know, I wish I can find some photos for reff.
Thanks![8D]
The M1A1/2 commander’s hatch/cupola can rotate a full 360 degrees. After all, there may be occasions when the gunner is servicing a target and the TC spots another that needs to be taken care of. He then just gives the order for the gunner to finish the present engagement while he swings the M2 over to the new target in order to suppress and/or destroy it until the main gun can be brought to bear if necessary.[:D]
The cupola on all versions of the Abrams can rotate through 360 degrees. This can be done manually with a skate ring, or (at least in the M1) with a power attachment “joystick” that is attached to a flexible power cord allowing the TC to hook it up outside or inside. This feature may have been deleted on the M1A2, my memory isn’t serving me too well right now. The elevation feature of the weapons mount is a manual affair working in conjunction with a small 3X periscope for long range firing whilst buttoned up or with the hatch in the overhead protected position.
