I recently purchased the Academy M151A2 hard top with trailer kit, but I am having a hard time finding reference materials. Anyone have any ideas where I could find any. I googled it but not many clear or detailed pics. Thanks in advance.
Best that I can remember the hard top was never authorized for use(not saying it was used someplace) by the US, never seen a photo of one either
The hardtop Jeep (yes, we called them Jeep) depicted in the Academy kit (13012) was the exact type that equiped the US Army in Europe until Jan 1989. We had three per tank company, one for the commander, XO and 1st Sgt. There were at least a dozen more in the HQ company for the staff and specialty platoons (medics, mortars, scouts, support). All of them were hardtops with trailers.
The trailer top was constructed of plywood covered with canvas and hinged at one side. We called them doghouses. They were locally made by the units and no two looked alike.
All of the spare tires had a circular plywood insert, locally made, with the company or section logo. I remember the battalion maintenance officer’s Jeep had “Tiger Wrench” and the support platoon leader’s Jeep had “Fuel Pumpers and Ammo Humpers”.
The best reference is Verlinden Warmachines no. 14 M151 “Mutt”. On page 13 the Jeep depicted in the kit is pictured.
Thanks for the correction Rob
Thanks for the info .
The picture Rob references shows the Jeep in 3 color European camo of green, black and brown, it has a blade antenna on the roof that looks like a giant version of some of the sattelite radio antennas on new cars.
