How to covert frm m113a2 to m113a3 ? The exterior should be the same right ? ? or ??? pls give me some info … OIF do they use m113a3 ?
Yes, the majority of the M113 FOV is the A3 variant. Exterior visual differences are mainly the two external fuel tanks, the mounting holes for add on armor, front trim vane and some detail changes on the outside of the cargo ramp. Inside is a new engine, spall lining, new driver controls.
new engine 6v53 detriot turbocharge? i thought external tank also use by a2 … have picture to see ?
In US use, the only A2-based variants to use external tanks are the M981 FIST-V and the M1064 120mm mortar carrier. The external tanks did not become standard until the A3 variant. However, in Canada (perhaps some other countries), they use A2 variants with external fuel tanks.
so tamiya m113a2 kit is providing external tanks … is the kit can be convert into a3 variants ?
one more question what the different between M1A1(HA) and M1A1 (AIM) exterior different ?
Externally, nothing. They look the same. AIM is just a recently rebuilt tank.
why is HA call as heavy armour and sometimes call as HC heavy common ? both same meaning right or ???
HA is a modeling company box top term. We referred to the second generation M1A1 tanks as “Heavy Common” because they had the heavier armor (depleted uranium mesh) added and incorporated changes the Marines required (thus making it a common Army/Marine tank).

It can be made to cosmetically resemble an M113A3 to a casual observer. There are numerous minor detail/fitting differences that are not hard to do to make it into a real M113A3. The Tamiya boxtop art does show a drawing of an M113A3 and not an M113A2.
I used to have a side-by-side photo comparison in my motor pool (see link below) but the gallery is being updated and I haven’t gotten around to uploading the photos in the new gallery yet.
thanks great help
