m113 with TOW?

A long time ago, I built an m113 with an aftermarket resin (Verlinden [sp?]) TOW attached on top.

The resin kit was my 1st, and predictibly, a disaster (I didn’t know how brittle resin was).

Nonetheless, I’d like to return to the kit, assuming I can find one. I’d like it stock, that is, out of the box with the TOW (I think it was called a Dragon), but if I have to go aftermarket, so be it.

Any ideas?

An M47 Dragon is not the same as a TOW.

If it was a standard M113 with a TOW attached, there are no plastic kits of this type set-up that I know of. I believe Verlinden did make a resin set for this version. It simply bolted into the floor and stuck up out of the top troop hatch.

If it was an M901 Improved TOW Vehicle (ITV), an M113 with the TOW head on top, it is made by Italeri. Verlinden also did a resin conversion set for the TOW head.

If it was in fact a Dragon launcher up top, Academy’s M113A2 comes with the Dragon set-up in the kit.

If it was the single TOW launcher, this is an easy conversion. I can get you drawings of he set up. All you really need is a stand alone TOW that comes with the Dragon anti tank figures or the Italeri waepons set/

Hobby Fan do a conversion http://www.hobbyfan.com.tw/product/product_detailshowP.asp?no=20050920013 , will be a tad expensive though, and AFV Club do a weapons set http://www.hobbyfan.com.tw/product/product_detailshowP.asp?no=20050829022

I stand corrected, it was the Hammerhead version. m901 I guess.

Thanks for the heads up

13 Years ago?.. If your still around HeavyArty thanks for the post, I have looking for such a model as I served in a unit in Berlin about 1982 …M113 with single TOW launcher on a pedestal. Found no such model but did find a few pictures. Also found a similar set up in the IDF and Canadain forces. I was going to get the Jeep/TOW setup which is about $10 at the moment and mash it with a M113 model but will look at the Dragon anti tank figues and the Italeri Weapons set you mentioned.

Thanks

Ref the M113 with TOW missle launcer…This is a correction on my first post… I was not in Berlin, that came later. I was in Swienfurt Germany with the Army. It was a Single TOW launcher on and M113. I had my time line screwed up - I was stationed in Berlin about 5 years later with the Air Force.

I am still here and glad to help. Since the original post, there are quite a few resin TOW sets available, mainly from Legend. Also check out Shapeways for 3-D printed TOW sets. Good luck.

If it was this vehicle, it is the standard M113A1 or A2 with an M233 TOW kit. It is also the reason why the M901 is called the Improved TOW Vehicle or ITV. It is an improvement over the original TOW M113 variant.

M901 Improved Tow Vehicle. The improvement being that the shooting and reload is done under armor. Ideally from a hull down position so only the remote hammerhead is exposed. And with two missiles in the hammerhead, the second shot can be launched immediately as soon as a target is acquired. The track commander had a separate periscope for just that task.

He was asking about a single TOW mount on an M113. I’m not sure Verlinden did one of a single TOW mount, but they did the 901 conversion. I got one in a show raffle once. That thing is very heavy.

As far as I’ve seen, there is only the Hobbyfan TOW track conversion in 1/35. But it would not be too hard to do a basic conversion using a standard 113 and something like the Tamiya TOW Jeep for most of the TOW components. The biggest challenge will be to create the missile rack inside. Scratching up the pedestal for the gunner is pretty simple. The .50 mount had some kind of pivot modification to keep it from interfering with the TOW system.

I remember the Verlinden M901 conversion set. I was so happy when Italeri released their 1/35 M901 kit

You could use/modify this one from Shapeways for the TOW rack.

It looks similar to the actual one used.

Here is a really nice build of one at Armorama a few years ago: http://www.armorama.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=SquawkBox&file=index&req=viewtopic&topic_id=230953&page=1&ord=0
