Lysol wipes for pre-paint cleaning?

Any one have any experience using Lysol Disinfecting Wipes to initiallly wipe down a new model or to wipe down a primed model for final painting?

I know this is late. Each time I see this header to this post I ponder it and move on. But rethinking it now, you don’t need to disinfect. Usually a mild dish soap and warm water is more than sufficient. Rinse with cool water.

My final wipe down is with odorless mineral spirits, gets the oils off from skin and such. Especially with Stynylrez primer I find this to work well. A lot of folks use alcohol. To that I say it’s fine, just be sure it’s pure alcohol and has no soothing agents in it. Some do, and that can ruin the purpose of the final wipe down. I’ve had Stynylrez act funny when applied after an alcohol wipe but never with OMS. That was several years ago and that bottle Stynylrez and also alcohol are long gone.

My concern is that the wipes are designed to kill bacteria. Do they also remove oils and such contaminants? I would also be concerned as to whether or not they leave ANY residue behind that would cause problems with adheasion. I just use old t-shirt scraps and alchohol before I prime. To each his own.

I shared Brandon’s concerns about ‘extras’ in whatever the formula is in Lysol type brands – so I go with plain generic ‘alcohol’ wipes which can usually be found in pharmacies or in baby or personal care or travel goods sections of larger grocery stores. Can’t 100% swear there aren’t other chemicals included, but I’ve used them literally for decades with no ill effects on the (mainly Tamiya acrylics and Testors enamel) paints and clear finishes I use. I would also have concerns about the “extra” ingredients in Lysol wipes, such as the fragrances that give Lysol its characteristic smell. I would think it would leave a residue, and probably an oily one. For any wipe-downs that I do prior to primer or paint (assuming I do any), I generally just use a microfiber towel with nothing on it. Those will also get finger oils and other contaminants off the model.

I do use alcohol as well, for pre primer wash/wipe down and Mr Primer Surfacer or Mr Surfacer primers. Just not with Stynylrez. I use the store brand 70 or 90% found in the pharmacy isle at the pharmacy in my local grocery store. We have that and also a CVS drug store about 2/3 mile from my house.

Truly odorless Weber Turbenoid odorless is another option. No odor at all. We have that here for our oil painting art work. But it’s also more costly.
