Okay, we’ve all seen the spirals painted on more than one Fw 190 or occasional Bf 109 or 110. Perhaps fewer of us have seen the straight “two toned” spinner on several Luftwaffe fighters. My question is, I guess, twofold. First:
What else was used for Luftwaffe warning props? (I’ve heard tell of an offset oval, perhaps…)
Second:
Does anyone have pictures of the lesser known examples? (Anything but spirals. No offense, but honesly I’m sick of them. Long story.)
hey Mike… a good question… I am sure there are people with better resources than me, but on first glance the spiral didn’t appear as part of regulation until D-Day time or so… previously the spinner was painted in the color of the gruppe, or I have seen the two tone, “half and half” type spinners, and one done in 1/4th sections white black…
An interesting one I found was the BF-109 of Dietrich Hrabak.
Hist was done in quarters of white and black, but the front 1/3 of the black sections were red… I have a pic but it is hard to see it, but I think you get the idea…
good luck! Never thought about it but I might look some more into this myself…
—edit—
I seem to remember something about the offset oval… will have to chek into that, it would definitely look different than the norm!
I’m sure I have seen a quartered one with two white quarters, with a black, and a red one – three-tone – on a late 109, but I can’t help you on the source. Sorry.
