OK, real simple we pick a Jagdgeschwader and do a GB around it. JG 1,2,3,4,5,11, 26,27,51, 52,53,54,77 and 300 were the major players. I realize there were a few others but they played a very small role in the overall war effort.
Any interest?

I have a Bf109f in JG27 markings I want to throw in a quick desert dio, with a Kubelwagen and some figurines. Depends on the time frame I guess.
Great idea. I have a nearly finished Bf 109G-6, Hartmann’s White 1 from Jg52.
Given that I can barely get one build finished per year, that would have to be my entry. [:)]

I’ve been doing some research on JG 27. A relative was credited with 53 victories. (Wilhelm Kientsch). If I can find aircraft data, I’m in!
Wilhelm “Willy” Kientsch
Oberleutnant

Wilhelm Kientsch was born on 12 May 1921 at Kisslegg in Württemberg. Kientsch was posted to the Ergänzungs-Staffel/JG 27 on 27 May 1941 for operational training. At the beginning of 1942, Oberfähnrich Kientsch was transferred to the Stabsstaffel of II./JG 27 based in North Africa. He gained his first two victories on 18 March when he shot down two RAF P-40 fighters. By late June 1942, by which time Kientsch was serving with 5./JG 27, he had eight victories to his credit and, by the end of 1942, he had increased his score to 16. On 1 June 1943, Kientsch was appointed Staffelkapitän of 6./JG 27. He was particularly successful over Sicily and southern Italy in the spring and summer of 1943 claiming 25 victories, including his 20th victory, a USAAF P-38 twin-engined fighter on 16 April, one of eight he was to claim during his Mediterranean theatre service. Also included in his victories were nine four-engined bombers.

Staffelführer of 6./JG 27 Lt. Willy Kientsch leaves the cockpit of his Bf 109G-6 Trop. Trapani, spring 1943.
He claimed his 30th victory on 6 June, another P-38 near Pantelleria, and his 40th victory on 17 July, a USAAF B-24 four-engined bomber near Salerno. In August 1943, 6./JG 27 was relocated to bases in Germany to engage in Reichsverteidigung duties. Leutnant Kientsch was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 22 November for 44 victories. On 20 December, he claimed his 50th victory when he shot down a B-24 bomber near Bremen. Kientsch was killed in Bf 109 G-6 (WNr 440073) “Yellow 3” when he became disorientated in cloud during aerial combat and crashed into the ground near Würrisch/Hunsrück in Germany on 29 January 1944. Kientsch was posthumously awarded the Eichenlaub (Nr 527) on 20 July.
“Willy” Kientsch was credited with 53 victories. All his victories were recorded over the Western front. Included in his total are 20 four-engined bombers.

Luftwaffle you might get a better response if you narrow the field some. I agree all those units had marit but a few will be difficult to find decals for and others operated only late in the war. I would try to get a unit that operated from the battle of france to the very in (reich defence) This would give the largest variety of locations and aircraft varients.
JG 26 the Abbeville boys is a very good choice. long service alot of different aircraft. very popular.
JG 3 Udet long service, successfull in operation bonenplatte and as bomber killers decals abound.
JG 51 “molders” again long service, alot of popular names, decales easy to find.
JG 52 hartmanns outfit always popular, all the higest aces came from this unit. marking easy to find.
JG 54 "green hearts many well known names marking easy to come by.
JG 2 richthofen, 109 marking can be had many well had names.
These might not be good choices.
JG 77 ace of hearts, bar flew in this unit but not many popular names. marking can be hard to find at times. in the thick of it but not well known to molders. this is maybe?
JG 1 again in the thick of it but popular only for there reich defence checker boards among modelers.
JG 5 lack luster unit for modeling
Jg 11 dogfights, typical reich defence unit. probably not a good choice.
Jg 27 Marselle’s unit. other than that ?
JG 4 and 300 were very late war units only.
maybe this will help. how about a end of war of defence of the reich? those are usually popular? maybe a single unit is too confined? just thrwing ideas at you.
I will do Hasegawas 1:48 Bf109E-4 “Wick” -Luftwaffe I./JG2 Kommandeur Major Helmut Wick Oct., 1940 (yellow cowling)
Next year, once/if I finish the other 15 GBs I have in the queue ![]()
Well, actually I’d kind of scratched this idea due to the tepid response.
I realize some of the units are probably a bit obscure from a modeling perspective, I was just throwing an all inclusive list out there for the sake of discussion. There have already been a couple of Luftwaffe group builds that were a little more broad in scope so I was looking for a little different spin. The single unit may be a little too narrow for most modelers though as you pointed out. I’ve got a couple hundred different sheets of Luftwaffe decals so I can cover any of the Jagdgeschwader but I guess a lot of people don’t have that luxury. I guess the target audience here would be guys like me and you who are a little more LW focused. I’m open to doing this or something similar though if we can generate some interest, say ten people willing to commit.
