I usually model WWII aircraft, but recently have had the urge to build an early WWII german U-boat…Like a type VII maybe…
Would any of you happen to know a great kit for a U-boat that is around 1-2 feet long and has great detail. I love detailing. (The conning tower should be good fun!) A kit with good detail and fit would be great…I don’t want my first ship building experience to flounder!
Hands down the best U-Boat kit out there is the one made by Amati. Here’s a link to it. I haven’t built it myself, but reviews I’ve seen on it have been excellent. It makes great use of photo-etch for deck and vents.
Have fun!
If they can’t get it for you, you’ll find plenty on sale on the web. It looks like they just released it again in December. The price is about $200 at most sites that I’ve seen. Model Expo used to run sales on this kit. They may again.
To give you some ideas on the quality of this kit, check out the images at this site.
PS. By the way, you ruined me! While checking out Model Expo’s web site I saw that they are releasing a museum quality 1/16 scale model of the Curtis JN-4D Jenny. I can’t resist this kit!
