Looking to build a Huey

Hey all - Being mainly a fixed wing modeler, I am not very familiar with helicopter kits, so I need your advice.

I’m looking to build a Viet Nam era UH-1 in 1/72 scale, maybe two or three in their different variants (Slick, Dust Off, Attack). What kits would you recommend that also have good A/M detail sets available?

Thanks in advance,

stinger

Italeri has slick and gunship Huey’s in 1/72nd scale, Hasagawa has some slick kits, no one is doing any Dust-Off birds in 1/72nd scale but you could convert the slicks to medivacs

Thanks John - Do you know if there are any aftermarket PE sets available for the finer details? I’m thinking especially in terms of the weapons on the gunship version.

I suppose I could scratch my own stretchers and such for a Dust-Off if I could get some good pics for reference.

All of which will except pe’s and resins for Italeri…

Good luck and good build…[;)]

Hi Stinger,
Do not, I repeat: do NOT use the Revell of Germany/ Hasegawa 1:72 UH1D. It is by far the worst Huey kit ever released.

Although still not perfect, the Italeri/ Esci-kit in my humble opinion makes the best 1:72 Huey model.

Only reason to buy the Revell-kit, is the added sprue with the medevac-interior (stretchers): they’re ok.

Good luck!

Gertjan

Stinger,

If you find some good pics and/or referrences for the interior of the Dust off hueys please let me know. I’m doing a UH-1B “Dust Off” slick, specificall Maj. Kelly’s aircraft.
Check out the web site for the “Dust Off Association”. There are plenty of pictures, but not of the interior.

Geejeez,
Is the Revell medivac interior accurate? The Revell 1/72nd scale kit may be worth getting just for the information, eg layout, equipment, etc. of the medi-vac huey. The Revell kit looks like it is a D or H model huey, but the set up for medi-vac should be fairly comparable to the B model. (I think) rangerj

Lonewolf and Gertjan - Thanks guys, that’s the kind of info I need.

Ranjerj - I’ll be sure to pass on whatever I find re: the Dust Off interiors.

B models took three litters across the cabin, while D and H models took six(three along each side of the cabin)

Thanks, Grandad

I was just reading that. The D and H mod’s also had longer fuselages and tail booms.

I’ll post a link as soon as I sort out which one I read it on.
