Has anybody built the AMT/Ertl S3 Viking kit? If so, what can you tell me about it? I want to build one in 1/48th, and it seems to be the only option. Thanks!

I have that kit at home and it is a very nice kit,my only real complaint that the transparencies are smoke tinted, apparently a AMT trend at the time.Unfortunately as nice a kit as it is I don’t see myself building it so it’s in my “thinning out” pile.

The S-3 canopy was “smoke” tinted in real life, so the canopies you got in the kit are correct.

I picked up that kit a swap last year for like five bucks or something. I got the George Bush VS-35 decals from Superscale for it, #874 and the KMC cockpit detail. Too bad I won’t be able to see the cockpit due to the tinted windows.
I built the kit years ago. It went together ok. there were no major fit issues, and is decently detailed. And you can see into that huge cockpit through the tinted glass. Don’t try to install the torpedos, they don’t fit. you can fit two, but not four. The engines are ok and fit good if you take your time to line them up right. I did mine straight from the box and had a great looking model.
I would try to get the Italeri rebox though. The amt plastic is soft, flimsy and a bit thin in places. The Italeri re-box has better plastic and is a bit thicker in the wings and fusalage. Cost is about the same from what I have seen. Happy building!
