Looking for a good Corsair

I’ve been looking for a good Corsair kit, preferably 1:72 or possibly 1:48.

I’d like to model it with its gear retracted and in flight, but I’m not an expert with scratchbuilding and modifying kits.

It would also be good if it would be a late-model corsair, preferably an F4U-5N.

In 1/48 Tamiya makes the best Corsair,for a late model F4U-5N you can’t go wrong with the Revell/Monogram release,its originally a Hasagawa kit.Modeling gear up is easy,just skip all the l.g instructions and glue in the l.g doors to cover the wheelwells.Good Luck.

I actually found a picture of an airplane a friend of my father flew in the early 50s… don’t know if it is black or that dark sea blue the Navy used, but it would be fun to model an airplane flown by someone I’ve met

Since you prefer 1/72, Italeri makes an F4U-5N and F4U-7, which are quite good. The -5N I recently built and although there are some shape problems in the nose area, it still looks like a -5N. I think Hi-Tech makes a resin nose correction set for it. Tamiya have also released their Corsair in 1/72, but I don’t think they make a -5N. HTH

I’m building the Hasegawa 1/72 F4U-1A (Kepford) kit and am quite happy with it. I didn’t like the cockpit too much so I got a p/e set to spruce it up a bit. I also got a vac-form canopy because in 1/72 the kit versions look pretty poor. The panel lines are raised, but other than that it’s very nice. The engine looks pretty good and the detail markings are all fairly nice. I’ve heard that the Tamiya kit is a bit better, but haven’t seen it myself.

I’m very close to getting a digital cam, so perhaps I’ll be able to post a few ‘in-progress’ pics soon…
