Longest Day GB

OK guys, this is the build thread for the GB to commemrate the 70th anneversary of the Allied invasion of Europe on 6th June 1944. This GB was first propsed by Hans von Hammer last year, but as he has been MIA for a few months, i have taken it on in lieu of his return.

Hans hadn’t setteled on a title yet, i decided to go with the Longest Day as it covers both sides of the battle. I am going to stick with the time frame and rule that hans decided on except one.

The GB will begin on 6th June this year (2013) and end on 6th June 2014, the 70th Anniversary. But no starting before D-day.

Please Note, I am going to be fairly strict on the end date. For several reasons there will be no extension. But if you build was started before the end date, you can still post your progress pics here and claim your badge.

Last date to enter the GB is 1st May 2014.

Your build must have taken part in the Normandy battles no later than D+24 (30th June 1944). If it took part in the ground war, flew over head or supported from the sea, its in.

Any scale and you can build OOB or throw as many goodies at bit as you like.

The only change i am making in that cross overs are allowed.

But most importantly, progress pics are a must.

We had 3 badge ideas but i have decided to stick with two. The one with the flags of the countries that landed on the beaches was nice, but i felt it excluded all the other countries that took part such as Poles, Czechs; Dutch and so on, many of whom supported the landings by air or sea. But if you really want that third badge, i can add it.

So for those doing an Allied build, this is your badge.

And for thsoe doing a German build, we have this one

Feel free to grab the badge and re size as you see fit.

And thanks for Wayne for officially starting us off with his Tamiya Jg Pz IV of the 116th Pz Div. Though this Div didn’t arrive in Normandy within the time frame of this GB, it did arrive soon after.

Oh what to build for me…?

Okay, I’m in, Put me down for Tamiya’s 1 48th scale P 47 Bubble-Top Jug. I know I said I would do a couple of other things, but there not happening any time soon.

No worries ken, you can add another if time allows.

Thanks Bish

Bish,

Put me down also. I spent today at Modelmania 2013 in Houston looking for a subject for this GB. I picked up a couple of 1/72nd scale aircraft, one a Monogram(?) DC-3 airliner, and a C-47 (Italeri). But I’m not sure if I’m going to do these for the GB. I may do a diorama instead. Many will do C-47s, but I would like to see if I can recreate a scene from “The Longest Day” movie. Might be too difficult, and I’ll drop back to the C-47. So put me down as “Diorama” with “C-47 Alternate”. Thanks!

And as inspiration for everyone, I’ll post a link to this video from the West Point Glee Club. The only thing wrong is that it does not cover Canadian or British forces. [:(]

Enjoy!

Gary

I do hope you can pull of the dio, that sounds likea gfreat idea. What scale will that be.

So is a Glee club just another name for a choir, i had only heard this term because of the TV series. Thanks for posting that link.

I just started reading this book last week

Its all about the German 352nd Inf Div in the build up and battle for Normandy. Its been pretty good reading so far. And even though i have been reading about the Germans in WW2 for over 20 years, i am still amazed at how disorganised they could be.

Question: I think I know, but I’ve never heard it explained. What is the reasoning for the invasion stripes on the airplanes? I think it would be so Allied aircraft wouldn’t be shot at by any Allied forces. Is this the only reason or is there more too it?

Yes, they were a recognition mark for Allied aircraft. They wanted to avoid the friendly fire incidents as happened during the Sicily invasion

Bish,

Oh, sorry! The diorama is 1/48th scale, though it makes things difficult (and that is why the diorama might get changed to a C-47). The DC-3 and C-47 are both 1/72nd. If anyone knows where I can find an M3 White half-track in 1/48 scale, I would be grateful. M3 half-tracks in ANY scale are rare.

Yes, “Glee Club” is a choir without the religious affiliation (I suppose). And thanks for the book recommendation. I need to order some more reading material soon. As for the Germans being incredibly disorganized sometimes, it was mostly in the higher levels of command. Not that the allies didn’t make mistakes, but they could better afford to.

Looking forward to this GB!

Gary

PS> On the other hand, King’s Hobbies had a beautiful British LCT (4) resin kit in 1/76th scale. Were it not for the odd scale, and a price of $225 (and it was 50% off), I might be doing that. Well, C’est le Guerre!

Gary, I’ll be waiting to see your dio. What scene from the Longest Day. Will you let us in on it, or do we have to wait for June 6 1944 (2014)?

Sounds great. Maybe with any luck, I’ll get mine built this year. Its still on the agenda, but everyone keeps starting these great Group Builds. LOL It’s going to be a US Army Air Force base in England in WW2. I’m still planning on using the Jug (except now its going to be the Bubble top) It’s going to be the affternoon of June 5th 1944 and the pilot’s best friend from home who flies a P 38 has flown in to visit. Hopefully, I can do a better job on the next one.

I would like to sign up. Who would want to miss a D-Day group build?

I’ll contribute a B-24 from the 834th Bomb Squadron, 486th Bomb Group. Academy put out four “zodiac squadron” Liberators a few years ago. I haven’t gotten around to any of them yet. Scale is 1/72.

Apparently they took part in the D-Day bombings on 6 June, 1944.

glad to have you on board CMK. Indeed they did take part, they attacked Caen, Harcourt and Lisieux on D-day.

This is from the BG website. Missions 15, 16 and 17.

www.486th.org/…/Missions1.htm

But if i am reading it right, they didn’t drop any bombs due to cloud.

I didn’t know that happened in Sicily

Thanks for the link, Bish. I hadn’t done enough research to know that.

Bish: I asked Hans to put me down as a provisional here.

Well, I pulled out the AFV Club 1/35th Churchill Mk III AVRE (Armoured Vehicle Royal Engineers) and it has decals for two D-Day vehicles so please put me down with her even though the crazy complex suspension system has me holding my head.

I am in for a Revell 1/76 M7 Priest

Sorry guys, i did see your posts this morning, but i had to get off to work. Welcome aboard, i will add you to the roster.

Thanks Bish!
