[:D] I’m not trying to run in competion with Black Wolfe but trying to confirm some information gleaned from a respected sourse that seemed a little odd.
Question: Which Allied aircraft sank the most enemy ships in WW2?
Dai
How about the PBY Catalina? That would be my guess. Althought the B-25 and A-20 shot up a lot of Japanese Shipping.
Hmmmmmmmmm theres alot of planes that come to mind. The mosquito, beaufighter, dauntless, avenger, B-25, beaufort and the A-20. Those are my guesses.
Interesting that you brought up that question. I was just down at the National Naval Air Museum in Pensacola, FL, and they say that the Catalina was the king at destroying enemy shipping (during WWII). Supposedly, nothing else came close to matching its record.
Nice trys Gents but the one I have been given is not one of the above.
Keep trying.
Dai
obvious guesses would be sbd, or avenger. those are too obvious. this must be a form of a trick question.

How about the B-24 Liberator and it’s variants, including the PB4Y series.
I’m surprised it doesn’t seem to be the Catalina or Beaufighter. Both of these planes sank a lot of ships all over the world… Other choices would be the Mosquito and B-25, that were also used in both theatres in the anti-shipping role. 4-engined bombers never hit very much because they tended to stay too high… so what I’m saying is: not a clue[%-)][D)]
Hmmm, how about the Fairy Swordfish. It’s just a guess…
Could it be the P-40? They were all over the place and were pretty good dive bombers, weren’t they?
Hey Dai, my guess would have been the Beaufighter or Sunderland, probably wrong, but this helps to while away a quiet sunday evening!
P S How is that garden project going?, you’d better not post pictures here, you’d get drummed off the forum!
All the best
Pete
I guess the Ju 87 STUKA just because it is my favorite aircraft of WWII.
I didn’t know the Stuka was an Allied aircraft? [(-D][(-D][;)]
Mike
Eh…sorry to say this F4PHANTOMGUY but the Stuka is not an Allied aircraft. But Im sure it has sunk plenty of boats.
Myself…If its none of the above then I have no idea.
How about the Curtiss SB2C Helldiver, It seems I read that it had the highest score of any A/C in WWII for ship kills. AND BTW, If you count the Stukas operated by the Italians after they changed sides, then the Stuka WAS operated by the Allies.
I’m going with the Avenger.
One right sofar. Remember the war started in 1939 and this aircraft was in at the beginning. It also was the indirect cause of the US entering the war.

Im gona say the Sunderland… England was sinking ships long before the US was.
I’m shooting with either the Douglas SBD Dauntless or the Curtiss SB2C Helldiver
