Liquid Cement

Hi, on my bottle of Tamiya Liquid Cement there are several warnings:

  • Poison
  • Avoid contact with skin and eyes
  • Avoid breathing as vapour

Do I need to wear somekind of face mask/respirator when using this cement? Or are two opened windows nearby considered enough ventilation? If I need to wear a face mask would a Mansfield Medical MASK5 - mansfieldmedical.com - (it says “All purpose disposable face mask for usage in Homes, Farms, Factories”) be sufficient? Thanks.

Well, I would think that two open windows would be enough, but I’m no expert. Also, I usually leave the room for a while after using any glues to let the vapors dissipate. As far as contact with skin and eyes, I use a toothpick or my Touch-n-Flow (which is one great tool, I might add [^]) to apply cement; I hardly ever get anything on my skin. Washing your hands when done wouldn’t be a bad idea either. But getting a drop of the stuff on you probably wouldn’t kill you.[:D]

I’ve never had a problem using Tamiya liquid cement. It smells like nail polish… but I do ensure I have good ventilation.

A good ventilation is probably enough. Open up some windows. If that doesn’t cause a draft, you could use a fan to blow the fumes away.

If you feel that that is not enough, you could use a respirator, but it seems a bit over the top. Face masks don’t protect you from fumes, so that wouldn’t work.

I’ve once knocked over my bottle of Tamiya cement onto my rag of a shirt I was wearing at the time. Promptly ripped off the shirt, threw it into a bucket, and filled the bucket of water. Also, I promptly hit the shower. That stuff is caustic. I’ve once left a drop of semi liquid cement on my finger (didn’t know it was there), and I’ve only noticed it was on my finger when the pain started, as it gave me chemical burns… Fun ways to find out the reasons for the warning labels eh?

As for my own use of the liquid cement (FYI, I love it! ), I apply a small amount to where I need it, and tightly cap the bottle when I’m done with it.

As long as you aren’t huffing/inhaling the stuff deliberatly, the thing you’ll probably notice most is a headache.
