After a 45 year absence from building car models, I’ve purchased the 1/8 scale Lindberg “Custom T” kit. I have a big problem with the kit, the “rag top” and interior are made of a vinyl type plastic. Can anyone tell me what type of paint to use on this type of soft plastic?
Also, do any of you folk clear spray (either flat or gloss) the model’s chrome parts to improve the appearence by eliminating the “too shiny” look of plastic plated chrome. The rest of the kit looks interesting, like Monogram’s BIG T (built that car in the mid 1960’s). But the Lindberg car is motorized, looks like a challenge!
I can’t help you out much with paint usage on those vinyl parts but to tone the chrome down and to give it a more true metal look I usually coat my parts with Tamiya Smoke. It works really good at reducing the toy like look from model chrome and levels out nice.
The paint is X-19 Tamiya Smoke.
To illustrate, the wheel on the R/H side has no Tamiya Smoke paint on it where the L/H was treated with a coat of it.
You’ll also need acrylic paint for the vinyl pieces. Enamels like Testors won’t dry properly or at all on vinyl. Dullcote will give your parts an unpolished aluminum look, or as Mustang said, use the smoke to keep the shine up.
That’s a great idea, mustang1989! I just printed it out and it will go into an old copy of Tips and Techniques for Scale Modelers that I’ve had for many years.
