Here it is, almost complete but I just couldnt wait any longer to post it. Currently I am waiting for the Vietnam version of the kit to come so that I can rob it of it’s photo etch pieces. the kit is AFV’s and the statue is verlinden. Building this kit was a big challange for me, the parts were warped, and the instructions vague, but I think it turned out OK. The big trick for me is now trying to figure out how to put the crowd behind and around the 88. Hmmmmm, maybe you guys will have some good ideas. Anyway, enjoy, and as always feel free to comment.
I was wondering when someone was going to tackle this one after I saw the Sadam statue in Verlinden’s catalog.
Nicely done! Actually, I think the base and crowd are going to be the bigger challenge. Take your time and this could end up being a real beauty.

Looks great to me! Can’t really offer any suggestions on how to handle the crowd, but maybe a solid backdrop could help give it more of a 3-D look and feel? Excellent work on the vehicle! [tup]

I love it! Should be quite the challenge to add the crowd. Since I have no refs it would be hard to suggest much.
I guess Im gonna have to put a picture in the back, and do some plastic surgery to soldiers and ETS them into civilians. Unless someone produces middle east civilians in 1/35 scale. It should be interesting to say the very least. Thanks guys, and I’ll keep you posted as the work progresses.

The weathering on the 88 is a mix of ground black pastel chalk and windex applied liberaly to the entire vehicle.

I remember watching that Saddam Hussein statue being dismantled on TV last year and one of my very first thoughts was, “I’ll bet there’s a bunch of modelers right now saying, ‘There’s an idea for a diorama!’” If you’ve got tape of that, try rerunning it through your VCR; it will probably give you some ideas.
I dunno… just a thought, but if you think of the video feed from that… what was the centerpiece? maybe stick to the the 88, the soldier and the statue.,… build just enough detail around it to create the basic layout of the street immediately surrounding that exact scene… no other soldiers, no civilians… make it the focus point of the whole scene…
ya, thats kinda the direction that Im leaning. I got a chance to go out there the other day but we didnt stop. All I need is some civilians, just a few and I can use a photo back drop for the rest. There is a huge mosque in the back ground of the scene. I was wondering why the statue wasnt tall enough when I backed the 88 up to it. Its because there are some crazy looking reflecting pools under it. So needless to say, Im gonna take some time, think about it, search the internet for what I’ll need to finish it and take it from there. It should be pretty cool looking when I get done with it.

I was thinking along the lines of a photo background for the crowd and buildings would be one way to go. Or, you could do the plastic surgery to a bunch of figures to make civvies out of them. Either way, you’ve got a great looking M88 there and the beginnings of an incredible diorama!
about the middle east civilians, look in the latest FSM about the M107 IDF Howitizer.
Read the article about the soldiers, I believe they might work.
