OK fellas, so my daughter is about to go on a Med cruise aboard the USS Bataan LHD-5.I would like to present her with a keepsake. My questions to the fine folks here are 1. is Revell the only one who makes a 1/350 kit , and 2. Can I use Revell’s kit ( LHD-1) to model the Bataan ( LHD-5 ) ?. Or are the differences to great. thanks a lot fellas
The same molds have been used/released by Gallery and Trumpeter as well - sort of a partnership deal. The two main releases have been Wasp (Gallery and Revell) and Iwo Jima LHD-7 (Gallery and Trumpeter). The kits themselves were largely designed by Trumpeter.
There are some differences between the two kits because there are differences between the ships. The Iwo Jima kit is an easier starting point as she is closer in configuration to the Bataan. Another proud papa built a Bataan for his son with a good build log here that might be of use - the finished build has been posted as a gallery here.
I was thinking of the Revell kit because it’s in 1/350. hopefully the conversion wont involve to much scratch building as I suck at it. lol
You can see pictures of LHD-5 at www.navsource.org (site doesn’t hot link so you have to go and look.)
Wow, the Gallery kit looks great. It should at twice the price of the Revell kit. Yet, I’m inclined to go with the Gallery kit. thanks for the link Tracy!. Seasick, I will check out those pics when I get home tonight. thanks
I think I saw a BATAAN for sale on squadrons website. Go to squadron.com.
thanks , I’ll check it out
