Hi I’m building the Oshkosh M-977 Italeri # 292 HEMTT… I’m wanting the front wheels turned to the left…Will some one Please tell how this is done? I don’t want to just have them turned left, but want the tilt of the wheel also…Does the front axle wheels turn more than the second axle wheels, would they be not as turned to the left as the front?..Would I use pins to help make the glue stronger to hold the wheels and axle hub together?.. Thanks in advance for the help. Ive spent the last two days looking through our forum to see how to turn wheels and cant find anyone whos asked this question before me?!..That don’t sound right…Someone has had to have asked I just can’t find it and I’m hoping some of you who have done this to their models will please explain with a tutorial or maybe pictures for me to copy…Thanks again…

On a HEMTT, the tires don’t really lean when turned. The first and second set of wheels turn at the same angle as well. They turn the same amount either left or right too. To turn them, you have to cut the axles where the ball joints are and turn them appropriately. Also make sure the tie rods are connected to keep the sides at the same angle. Sorry, no pics.
Check Prime Portal for pics.
Good luck.
Hey Gino,Thanks for the links…And thanks for the info about the tilt, and both front and rear steering turn the same not the front turns sharper than the rear…Okay Ive bookmarked the sites and thank you again for the quik come back and info… I’m thinking that if I cut the hub/ball joint at the end of the axle, then drill & pin the Ball jount back to the axle, that should help hold in place for added strength & glue sit up…Also Ive cut the tie rods and after the ball joints are set I’ll reattach the tie rods front and rear…Again I thank you! Gino…I was hoping youd see this… I knew Id get a correct answer from you!! Also thanks for the "Prime Portal"for the Pic’s…

Okay I have a problem! I have already attached the back plate on the axle and need to cut the axle to make the wheels be turning left…Do I Cut it at the end where the ball joint hooks to the axle or do I cut the ball Joint its self and make the turn there, so I have the larger area to glue it back together? How would you do it? Ive never tried to turn a wheel! I see now, I can’t pin it as I was hoping to do…Thanks again for the info, but I do need a bit more to help me do it right…Theres no more M-977s in plastic kits their Discountued… If I screw this up I’m out of luck!.. Do I cut the Ball joint off the axle, sand it round and drill a hole in the Ball joint and insert the end of the axle into the small hole in the ball joint?..
I would cut the ball joint itself. That is how the wheels turn on the actual vehicle. You should stll be able to drill a hole in both parts of your cut and pin them with some rod for strength as well
Good luck.
Thank you Gino…Thats what I thought as I got to looking at it…I won’t be doing it now to the 977… I’ll wait and turn the wheels on the M-978 fuel tanker…Ive already put it together to much to be able to get in and cut the joint’s now…I’ll cut the fuel tankers axles before their assembled and do it right next time!..
I just recieved a e-mail from Italeri that the 977 is out of stock and will not be made any more! Its been discontinued…So I’ll be hitting the hobby shops in Bakersfield tomorrow trying to find it…I bought the last one at “Smiths” in Lancaster…Hows the heat there at the Base? In the 107’s huh? In the shade! …Few more weeks and it will be cooling off…I delivered the Electrical Conduit to the contracters there at Fort Irwin 11 years ago for the new buildings they were building when I was still working, driving for Western Tube & Conduit…I delivered 3 loads, 40,000 lbs a piece in just one week!..They were building the BOQ’s and a PX…The contractor told me, I had asked what all the conduit was going to be used for…If Id known about the dune buggys, I would have re-Up’d ha,ha…The Chinowith buggys were our customer too, I delivered the steel tubing to them for the buggys…Sure would have beat my old Infantry ground pounding day’s LOL… Youve got a fun job there in the Artillery… But! That place gets Hot!..LOL… But only for a few months, then its just windy and dusty huh? Thanks again…“RC”
Good luck with it.
Actually, I am now at Maxwell AFB in AL. I’m going to school here for a year. I’ll be happy if I never return to Ft Irwin, not likely, but sounds good.
