Lee/Sherman pictures

Hello All,
Here are some pictures of recently completed kits. They are all 1/35th scale Tamiya.
The first Lee is marked with the early war national insignia. The second was copied (loosely) from a photo in the Hunnicutt Sherman book. It showed a Lee in Soviet service with the U.S. registration number and captured by the Germans. I could only see one German national mark and used a bit of modeller’s license to add the others.
The Sherman was also copied from a photo from the Hunnicutt book. This showed how some Shermans had been reworked in the ordinance depots in Japan after the war. Yes, that is a 76MM gun in the original M4A3 turret. The book said this was tried during WW II but not adopted. No explanation was given as to why this was done post war.
Any way, hope you enjoy the pictures and as always feel free to

Was pretty well pleased with my over all effort until I added the pastels for dust and just not sure what happened. Will probably leave them as they are, not sure at this point.
Thanks for taking time to take a look/comment.
Joe

Joe, these look GREAT! Seriously, that’s some really good weathering there! I like the post shading on the Lee’s and the subtle tones on the Sherman–very nice! Cool to see a one-off version of the Shermy, too!

I think that the pastels look awesome too! I’m not sure what you see as being wron, but I’d leave them just as they are! They look like you just took 'em out of the field! COOL!

Hey Doog,

I can’t afford pats on the back like that from you. I can feel my head swelling [:-,][:-,].

Seriously, I appreciate your comments. Yes, I have to bring it up one more time. After seeing your Hetzer, I know I still have a long way to go [:(][BH]

Re:76mm upgunned M-4’s. The Osprey book on the 76mm M-4 says something about this being an expedient way to improve the anti tank firepower/capabilities late in the war. It was more cramped in the smaller older turret and there were sufficient numbers of 76mm M-4’s with the T-23 turret coming off production not to make this an urgent program. During the early phases of the Cold War, the Military Assistance Program of supplying friendly countries such as Yugoslavia and Pakistan with surplus inexpensive US tanks this was done. The T-23 turreted M-4s with 76mm gun being selected as the primary tank for US Army usage postwar. BTW, it was those upgunned 76mm M-4’s sent to Yugoslavia that were used in the movie “Kelly’s Heroes”.

Nice job on those M-3’s and the M-4. Nice to see OD armor here too!

I really like those tanks youve built. Ive wanted to build an M3 ever since I saw the movie sahara, which stars a Lee as the main tank in the movie. About the dust, have you dull coated these models? What I usually do for my tanks is over-apply pastel weathering and dust, then do a dull coat (spray can) over the entire model. It seals in the pastels as well as tone down the effect, blending them in a lot more. The dull coat really does remove the pastels though, so I would try on a scrap peice or test tank to know how much pastels to apply the first time. Good job on the tanks.

Thanks guys. Yes, I do dullcoat, but apply the pastels afterwards. I have a general build/finish routine, but I always seems to stray at some point and switch things around.

On that movie Sahara, wasn’t that a Stuart? Perhaps I’m getting it confused with something else, but the one I’m thinking of had Humphrey Bogart.

You know what, it probably is a Stuart. I saw the movie a long long time ago, and once I saw your tank I just guessed it was a Lee in the movie. The strange gun layout is very distinct on both tanks.

Very nice weathering on both Panther. I particularly like the Lee. That gun arrangement is ace. Just love its cookiness. lol (Is that a word?)
