Latest IJN Color Recommendation

What exterior fuselage color do we now recommend for 1/48 IJN A6M2 circa Pearl Harbor into 1942? Vallejo Ash Grey 71.311? AK Real Color J3SP Amber Grey? Tamiya XF76? any others you know? I cannot find the “definitive” grey color…seems that recommendations constantly differ…

(by the way, I intend to use Tamiya XF17 Sea Blue for the cowling.)

Thank you,

Season’s Greetings,

Eric

Yes,you are right, everyone or company has differing opinions. Is there really a definitive color when you take into consideration weathering and field applications, just go with something close and that’s easing to your eye.

I know next to nothing about WWII aircraft, but here’s something for you to take a look at. A plus to these paints is that they work well in high, dry climates, with no fuss.

This site has some good research into the subject.

What? we have moved on from pollyscale concrete? Mr color #35 mitsubishi green works for me… That said, here is an interesting article … https://modelingmadness.com/earlya6mcolors.htm

We can thank Testors & Rustoleum for that enforced choice. [;)] Was it Concrete or Old Concrete that was the good match?

I believe it was old concrete. Still have a bottle of each.

The site SP posted is really good! They have what’s probably the best written article on the subject.

Beyond that it makes my head hurt. I’m not sure anyone really knows for sure what’s exactly right for Ame-Iro. Like so many things you’re probably better off painting it however looks right to you.

Just ordered AK Real Color (lacquers) IJN J3 (Amber Grey).

Appreciate all your inputs,

Merry Xmas
