Latest Completed, Tamiya's P-47D-25Re 'Thunderbolt'

I built this model as an OOB project. I originally began her a while back and for whatever reason, lost interest. Not sure why, but that is what happened. I used Cutting Edge decals for the markings of Capt Fred Christianson, 56th FG. I used Alclad II for the NMF, hilighted with Testors Metalizer on select panels. All regular paint, is Testors Model Master enamels. The antenna is nylon thread and weathering is by thinned oils and pastel chalk. Here’s pictures of the finished kit, I hope you enjoy them. Thanks for looking, and have a great day, OORAH!

Well Freddie, thats stunning. If theres an Allied plane that stirs my juices, then its the P47. It all looks perfect. The nmf is especially nice.

Top marks.

…Guy

Now THAT is one gorgeous Jug. I have always loved the P-47 and you did a superlative job on yours. The weathering is especially well done. It is noticeable, but not so overdone as to distract from the rest of the model.

Awesome looking jug! I’m really amazed my the weathering. Looks impeccable! But I have to say that theres just something about invasion stripes on a bird that just twangs my buds (that’s a good thing)[8D]

Freddie- Absolutely gorgeous! Your NMF is especially well done, with a dull sheen to the aluminum and a slightly chalky, oxidized finish. Did you use any clearcoats over the metal areas? How did you achieve that very slightly dull finish? I love it, well done! [bow]

.

YES, YES,I must know! Excellent work. Just pefect!!

i dont build warbirds myself, i build modern jets. but as a builder myself i can apreciate and respect others good work when i see it. she looks very nice, and you did a great job [;)]

I’m with these two tell us how you did it.

Hey Freddie my man… haven’t seen you in a while. How ya been?

That’s one of the best Jug I’ve seen. Really stunning work.

Freddie,

Beautiful JUG! If I could step back in time the JUG would be 1 of my top 5 aircraft to fly.

Marc

Outstanding job! A 10 out of 10 score.

Great looking Jug. Well done [tup].

Nice job! I enjoyed the pics.

Thanks a lot guys, I appreciate all the kind words, makes it worthwhile to hear that from fellow model geeks.

The NMF was done using Alclad II. I painted the kit a base of white aluminium. Then, I selected different panels here and there around the model. There was no particular reason for which panel got which paint, and after masking off two, three or four panels, hit them with a different shade of aluminum. I repeated this process a number of times. Colors used were:

White Aluminum, Dark aluminum, Duraluminum, burnt aluminum, polished aluminum, and steel. After all were dry, about a day, I overcoated the entire model with Testors Metalizer Sealer. This helped the decals and gave the kit a glossy finish. After the decals were applied, (And the D-Day stripes ARE Tamiya’s kit supplied decals) and dried, also about a day, I over sprayed the entire model with Testors DullCoat Laquer. That dries pretty fast, but I let that sit for about half a day.

Weathering was done by thinning oils with mineral spirits. I used Grummbacher Black and Burnt Sienna to get a muddy brown color. I then did the “touch the tiny pointy brush to the panel line” method, and wiped away any excess. Streaks are just that. Excess oils wiped in the direction of the airflow. That too dries quickly but, I let it sit overnight, so I wouldn’t have any fingerprints.

I like the kit so much, I am now into Tamiya’s P-47M-1 Re. I can’t wait to paint that bird, should be by this weekend. I’ll post pics then. Thanks again and have a nice day.

Wow! Great job! The NMF is outstanding. I have not tried the Alclad II, but your works has me Sold on it!

I am really impressed with the Invasion Stripe decals. I have never had good results with Tamiya decals. They never seem to lay down no matter how much Micro Sol I use. Do you have any decal tips!?

Everything looks great, the paintwork especially. One thing I noticed: There seems to be nothing covering the space in front of the instrument panel. You can see inside the fuselage there. Is that how the P-47 was? I thought there was some sort of panel there.

Some did and some did not have a combing over the instrument panel. Tamiya’s D-25Re does not. The M does. I think in the future, I will paint that area BLACK on all future builds, (and there will be future builds of this terrific model) I just didn’t realise it was so prominent. If it were black you wouldn’t notice it as much. A mistake on my part, so if you’re planning on building the Tamiya kit, watch out for that.

Thanks for the heads up, and the kudos.

I used Micro Sol, and Micro Set. The one with the RED ink on the label is stronger so BE CAREFULL!!..I also used Solveset on Tamiya decals. It takes a few seconds longer, but when it kicks in, it kicks in. Watch the decal and work S-L-O-W-L-Y! Keep adding more solution as you need to and pushing out wrinkles with a SOFT brush, not a hard or pointy brush as they WILL TEAR THE FILM! Good quality decals are a big help too. These were Cutting Edge and they’re terrific. To bad they’re hard to get now with CE going belly up. Hope this all helps.

Hey Marc,

Nice seeing you too. I’ve been building, just not posting. Hope all is well with you and your family and I’ll see you at Mosquitocon next year.

Freddie

Thanks for the tip!

I’ll have to try the Solveset. [:)]
