Here’s some info that may help you in your research…

The following RAF Bomber Command units participated in raids on German Naval targets on September 4th, 1939:

110 Sqn - flying Blenheims, 1 of 5 aircraft lost

107 Sqn - flying Blenheims, 4 of 5 aircraft lost

9 Sqn - flying Wellingtons, 2 of 6 aircraft lost

149 Sqn - flying Wellingtons, all 8 aircraft returned

Click on each unit designations to see a relevent history page from an RAF Bomber Command site which is part of the official RAF website.

As to Mr. Slattery himself, I’ve come across only a few webpages on which he is mentioned, but no information is given as to which unit he flew with. If I had to guess, I’d say he was with 107 Sqn. But that’s just a hunch.

Almost forgot… another avenue to explore may be the POW camp where he was ultimately held at the end of the war, Stalag XIB, with RAF POW #2, Georgie Booth.

Here’s a page on the RAF Ex-POW Association website which refers to Larry Slattery:

The Stalag XIB Memorial Project

Mention is made of a music scholarship in his name (he was a violinist) and that may be yet another avenue to explore.

I’ll post any aditional info I may find…

Fade to Black…

Okey dokey, I’m now 99.9% sure that Larry Slattery was with 107 Sqn, in which case the aircraft in question would be a Blenheim Mk.IV.

Here’s a page on the Nanton Lancaster Society website which honors the first Canadian killed during RAF Bomber Command ops during WWII; Sgt. Albert Stanley Price, a pilot with 107 Sqn RAF.

Honouring “The First Of The Ten Thousand” 1998 Spring & Summer Newsletter

The raid during which he was shot down was that of September 4th, 1939. Mention is made of all three crew members escaping Sgt Price’s Blenheim, which ditched in the water. Sgt Price later died of his wounds but the other two crew members, presumably Larry Slattery and Georgie Booth, are listed as being the first RAF POW’s of the war, although they are not mentioned by name. Their crew positions would be gunner and bomb-aimer, but I’m not sure which was which.

As to the actual markings of the aircraft, I don’t know. But the 107 Sqn history page linked above will give you a fair idea, as it has a profile showing the basic unit markings.

The profile on that page shows the daylight scheme, but the unit’s Blenheims (as well as most other units) were repainted black on the bottom of the aircraft.

I’ll try and see if I can find more definite info on the scheme and markings, but for now, here’s a link to a page on the Dutch Decal website. It shows a decal sheet in their Kits at War line, K4/8: RAF Medium Bombers, which has markings for a 107 Sqn Blenheim Mk.IV with black undersides. It’s the 7th sheet down; the image isn’t too clear, but it may help you out some.

Hey Mullark, glad to be of help.

I’m curious to know where you found the info for the serial and codes and all. Now that I’ve spent a bit of time grunging around on this, my curiosity is fully peaked. If I get around to building a Blenheim someday, this just may be the one…
