well, following up on my WIP post, I figured I’d put a few snaps up of what I’ve got mostly finished (an antenna wire yet to add, and after I stain coat the engine cowls, I’ll display those nearby) of my Tropical Tiffy Mk I. I’ve finished off a few of Dartmoor’s figures for it, and shortly I plan to finish off a sandy base to pose everything on. All the markings (with the exception of stencils, tail fin flashes and serial no’s) were painted on. I think I’ve overdone the weathering a bit, but experimentation and learning for next time was the goal. I’ve scratch built the work table with a small tea cup and a few engine / gun drawings shrunk to size. I plan to pose this with the Officer irritating the Mechanic over the table (art imitates life) and the third figure walking past. The tarps are molded sculpey, and not meant to hide anything, just to add to. They are removable.

I did, Eric. I’d found on Google images an exploded diagram of the Napier engine and Hispano cannons (though they’re for a Spitfire wing, I don’t think at that scale anyone would ever know) as well as a ‘weight diagram’ for the Typhoon. I just photocopied and reduced until they looked about right for size against the figures.
Nicely detailed build Andrew. Those tarps and maps are killer! Nice job chipping the prop blades too. Its hard seeing a Tiffy in desert though. Now I gotta break out my bubble top…

Over the last couple of days, I’ve been slowly working at a base for the figures and aircraft. Finding my normal ‘base’ compound (read drywall mud) had dried out, I figured I’d experiment. White glue and baking powder, I figured what can go wrong. Well, I got some neat looking rocks as a result, not what I was going for, but a happy accident. Some paint, some turf, and it doesn’t look all too bad. A few washes later and it looked almost good. Next came a balsa wood ‘maintenance runway’ with a little paint, some wash, and some Mig oil and grease and again it looked almost passable. A few little sprigs of long grass and it was time to bed things down. I’m hoping to add one more figure in the end, and prior to doing that I plan to fill in the large empty area forward of the prop with a ‘corner wall’ of a maintenance building. This will be scratch built from balsa, and will just be a corner wall and a touch of roof. Then I’ll have the third figure walking out from the building. Photos to follow as I progress. Comments and criticisms are always welcome, of course.

Didn’t we talk about this build on another thread. Sorry i hadn’t seen it before. That’s one nice looking build, and a great diorama as well. Lovely paint job and nice weathering as well.
That’s a neat idea with those plans, i wounder if it would work in 72nd. I have another engine maintenance dio coming up so i might have to try that.
Nice dio idea. Next time try wood filler for a base, easy to use and no mixing, fast drying too. Its good for smaller, simpler terrain such as yours.
