Large Scale Airliners

Anyone familiar with any large scale (1/72, 1/48) airliner kits such as 727, 737, 757, etc?

I think the largest scale for most airliners is 1/144, although you can get a DC-3 in 1/48th. Most jet airliners today would cost at least $100US for 1/72nd scale, because of all the plastic. I just built a 1/200 747, and it’s larger than most of my 1/48 stuff (it’s about 14" long, with an 11" wingspan). Can you image how big that thing would be in 1/72nd, or 1/48th? You’d need a gallon of paint for it.[:)][:)]

You know… I can remember getting one of the old Aurora brand Boeing 727’s for Christmas when I was young, and it was fairly large, probably 1/72nd scale… it was 18 or 19 inches long.

Hmmm… wonder if any of those are still floating around on EBay?

Heller makes the DC-6 and 2 different versions of the Lockheed Constellation. Williams makes the C-46 with Delta decals and the Boeing 247 with UAL decals. If your looking for jet airliners Heller makes a Boeing 707 and a company named ICM made a Boeing 727 in American colors a few years ago. ICM has gone out of business but theres always Ebay. There are also models of the FW.200, JU.86 and JU.52 available in pre war Lufthansa colors. Academy makes a Boeing 377 Stratocruise in PAA colors. As you can see there are a lot of 1/72 airliners out there but the propliners outnumber the jets by quite a bit.

I know I’ve run across a vac-form company that advertised a 1/48 727 once, no kidding. Can’t remember where/when. It’s been a while. Try Google-ing it.

I forgot about the caravelle that Mach 2 issued in United colors.

The company that produced the 1/72 727 that went out of business was KMC (Kendall Model Company), not ICM. There is a workbench review of it in the May 2000 issueof FSM. I happened to see the kit at the IPMS 2000 Nats here in Dallas, & it was impressive. If only I had gotten it when I had the chance…

there was a boing 737 in 1/72 i think it was by monogram but i could be wrong about that. airfix did a ford trimotor, fokker f27 and a dehavilland herron in 1/72 they and heller are bringing out a 1/72 concorde (see concorde group build). hope this helps.

AMT/Ertl used to make some of those 1/72 KC-135s that could be converted to a 707 with some work. I remember that 1/72 727 and I wish I had picked up one as well. But I was in school at the time and didn’t have the money needed to purchase it…what a shame [V]

Besides the KMC 727, Hellers 707 and the vacuforms from Aircraft in Miniature (see link above), Aurora made a 737-100 and 727-100 both in 72nd (or very close). They were very basic kits with no interior details. I saw an article in the old Scale Modeler magazine where a guy converted the 737 into a T-43. Always wanted to do that one.

I’ve got the old ENTEX 747 in 1/100. The kit also contains a 1/100 DC-3

Didn’t Airfix make a 1/72 scale 747 too?

the airfix 747 was in 1/144th. i have one that i use as my “test rig” for when i try new stuff out. it is basicaly complete exept undercart and engines, its a real mess now but i still have all the rest of its bits in its box so it may get fixed and finished one day. thanks for corecting me on that aurora 737, i wasn,t sure who did it and i was going to look up that artice to make sure.
Greg

Your right ch47guy. It was KMC not ICM. I picked one up mailorder about 5 years ago for $12.00. They had gone out of business and were trying to get rid of them. I should have gotten a few more. Thanks again for the correction.

Ray, what are the dimensions of the Entex 747? Are you willing to part with it?

Jack

Does anyone have an Entex DC-10 or L-1011 that they are willing to part with?

Jack

ch47guy What part of Dallas are you in? I’m in Sulphur Springs which is right down the road from you. rc_man73 and I have been having informal get togethers to work on some kits at his place in Commerce, are you interested?

BTW, there was a company a few years ago, the name escapes me, that made a conversion set for the 1/48 Tamiya Lancaster to make it into the Lancastrian airliner. Don’t know the status of this one as its outside of my area of interest.

I was in Douglas Models here in Salt Lake yesterday and they have the Heller 1/72 Boeing 707 in stock. I also saw that Heller (and Airfix) will be releasing a Concorde in 1/72 this year.
