Well…I guess my post on general discussion didn’t seem to go anywhere…so I’ll try here.

Looking for a recommendation on a kit for a Landing Ship Medium. My dad served on LSM 441 in WWII.

That’s pretty cool.

If you look around the www it appears that there’s or have been a couple of resin kits. 1/192, 1/350, and White Ensign Models has a couple of kits from Loose cannon at 1/700.

Two thoughts on the Loose Cannon kits - they are really, really nice, I’ve built a number and have always been very pleased with how they turn out, BUT - if you’re building it for your Dad, pick something a little bigger, he will never, ever be able to pick out all the itty bitty details. Which i discovered when I proudly presented my Dad with a model of his Victory ship, in 1/700. Forgetting he was pushing 80. Oh well!

Thanks mfsob…I’m really making it for myself to get more of a visual of what my dad served on. My father died about 3 years ago and was very proud of his service. I guess you could say I would be building it for my Dad…in his honor and memory.

He didn’t take any photos of his ship, however I have seen about 4 or 5 photos of his ship on the internet. One of the photos shows LSM 441 on the beach with a few sailors leaning over the rail…I sometimes wonder if he’s one of those sailors in the photo…who knows??

The largest kit I know of is the Dean’s Marine kit, in 1/72 scale. It is about 30 inches long, and is sold as a Radio Controlled model. I’ve got one-- it comes with a nice fiberglass hull, and plastic decks and superstructure parts. FIttings and weapons are a mix of cast metal, resin, and PE brass.

rcboater: Could you post a link to this? I checked Dean’ Marine and can’t find it. A search of “lsm” found nothing on their site. If it isn’t too outrageous price wise, I would like to get one also. My Dad was on 292 in WWII. He was on it for its entire career, from Brooklyn Navy Yard to the Phillipines and Japan, until it was decommissioned at NOB, Subic Bay. He is losing his vision a little, just had cataract surgery on both eyes last year. So a 1/72 would be ideal.

Edit: Nevermind. Found it. Their search doesn’t do description unless you use Advanced Search. Plus, they listed it under UK Warships, instead of Non-UK Warships. Oh well. $417. It might be a while before I can get this puppy. Come on Dragon! Make a 1/350! Or Trumpeter, or Someone!
