La Reale de France

HI all,

I’m building Heller’s La Reale (also getting the corel kit, Merry Christmas to me). Has anyone built this kit ? In particular the instructions are vague about construction of the rowing benches. Also, are there any references available on the net or in books? I particularly need pictures of the stern decorations. These apparently still exist in the Musee Maritime in Paris. Anyone have pics?

Thanks

anybody? Beuler?

Here’s a few pics showing details…

Wow, thanks for the link.
Any idea if that’s the Heller kit? I don’t read portugese…

Probably not unless the kit is 1/75 scale.

No the model in the photo’s is not the Heller, I can see real wood grain.

This was a scratchbuilt effort. I too have the Heller kit but I haven’t started it. If mine looks half as nice as that one, I’ll be delighted. How did he do all those fleurs de lis on the hull? I’m guessing freehand painted which impresses me all the more.[^]

I freehand painted all the decoration on mine. I used Zeiss 4.3x surgical loupes to do it though…

I have been wearing glasses since I was 15, (now 40). If all goes well I plan on having the lasik eye operation in late January. I hope to bealbe to do the super close up work as I did before.

Good luck to you, Big Jake!

Actually, Big Jake…

I’m an ophthalmology resident (not an optometrist !!! Ophthalmologists have MD’s). If you are over 40 you might start noticing the effects of presbyopia, which is an age related decrease in the eye’s ability to accommodate. This is why you need reading glasses when you get older. Unfortunately, this is entirely due to the crystalline lens in the eye becoming less flexible. It is the lens’ ability to be stretched or released which allows you to see near objects. Lasik, which is a great procedure, particularly if done with wavefront or custom cornea, only affects the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye. While your distance vision should be perfected, this will not help your presbyopia. You will still need reading glasses or magnifiers for close up work. Sorry.

I do not mind the needing of glasses but when the doc tells me the “Thin” plastic lens will be 3/4" thick, enought! I really can’t wait for January, I’m not Mr. McGoo or anything, but man I’m not going to miss these things!
