KV-2 for Winter Warriors GB *PICS*

Hi all, just finished this for the WW GB. More pics over there.

Very nice, I especially like the tools in the storage bin. It really adds to the realism, plus I haven’t seen alot with the storage bin open. It adds uniqueness.[:)]

Thx MG. That was probably the fiddliest bit to do, storage bin, I had to cut the top part off and then try to get it to look reasonable. Then bend some brass sheet to the right shape and use the PE accessories for the bin and model them in the open position. I had the Tamiya rubber jacket and boots for the contents, also the saw from the PE set.

OUTSTANDING, GUY!!! WOW!!!

OK–I went over there to the GB site, and scrolled back 6 pages or so to the pre-weathering shots you put up, and you don’t mention how you managed to get this perfect worn-whitewash look–the “hairspray technique”, I presume?

Spill your secrets, Lufty!!!

This DOES look fabulous though! The wear near the steps up the turret looks spot-on. Seriously, you’ve outdone yourself, man!

Hey, go check out my “snow tutorial” over in Diorama’s–it would be so cool to put this tank into a scene using my snow technique!

That’s a really nice looking build and the weathering is believable, but what gets me most is the guy (TC?) poking his head out of the hatch and the expression on his face. It is almost as if he is saying “Comrades, do not run over the Commissar’s dog.” Plaus, too and also- the figure gives a sense of scale to the size of that bunker of a turret.

I must have missed it over in the GB - how’d you pull off the headlight? Looks great. Can’t be the kit part, can it? [:P]

Wow thx guys, glad you liked her. Especially the figure.

As for the weathering it was really quite simple to do. I didnt use the hairspray technique as i wasnt quite sure about it. I went for the tried and tested chipping technique. 1stly you paint the tank in its base colour.

Then you have to grit your teeth and hit it with the white. Try to hit it heavier in places that wouldnt have an awfull lot of wear and lighter in places that would (Roof top. areas where crew would climb) Then using the base colour and a fine brush, start painting in the chips. Make sure that the paint is suitably thinned. Similar to how you would spray the colour from an airbrush. Dont try to do it all in one sitting. The chipping on mine took about 2 or 3 sittings.

Believe me when i say that it looks terrible to start but the more chips you get on the better it starts to look. After the chips have gone off paint the edges of the larger ones with white. This give the impression that it is actually a chip. Add some rusty chips as well for contrast. I then drybrushed the same colour around the heavy movement ares (Steps, Front glacis, rear deck, fenders etc) I then used a Filter that comes from Sin industries (Something to do with Mig i think). It was the Blue one for Panzer grey. This gave the white a better contrast. Less stark. Then once that has all dryed, give it a wash or 2 with something grubby. I used some of Biffas, van dyke brown. After that has gone off. Needs a day really, get in there with some dirty pigments.

Well, thats it. Im no expert by a long chalk but i like the finished look. I would have taken more in progress shots but didnt think anyone was interested lol.

Any questions ill be happy to answer.

Hi Lycraman, the headlight came from an english company www.historexagents.com. They were only a couple of ££££ and came with 2 in that size and about 4 more pairs for other sizes.

…Guy

Wow, I need to look them up. It really looks awesome. Thanks for the link! [:D]

Guy, that’s even MORE amazing that you did that all with a brush! WOW! [:P] I woulda sworn it was that hairspray thing!

Man, that’s some FINE work! [:D]

Very convincing!
This is one of the first KV2 builds I have seen that looks “mean”.
They all look big but this one has a punch!

And a very good and instructive “how to”, thank you for sharing!

Svenne

I poked around that site for a minute…are they the “resicast” lenses? If so, what size did you end up going with?

Thanks old chap. [;)]

This is the set i bought. I think the largest is 5.5mm…

Just do a search for the part number .R35267

…Guy

Ahhhhh, roger that. I see where you’re coming from now. [8-]

So how did you work the lenses in there? Just paint the back of the light housing silver, and then superglue these in? They really do look nice. Wow.

Luftwoller that is an awsome looking KV-2 you got there

Nice work Luftwoller, I agree with the inclusion of the figure to show the massive scale of this beast as a nice touch. [tup]

Spectre, Bill [bow] Thx guys. Dupes, the lens’ are great. They come with a silver backing from the off. All i did was cyano them straight in. Thats it. No messing about, theyre great.

…Guy

Uggh, I responded the other day, but it must have gotten lost. Just excellent. I really like the look on this guy. The figure adds some scale and is equally nice.

Hey Guy thats awsome for your first whitewash, man u got some paitients and what a result,I wonder where u got your tuition?Seeing half of that thing is brass and metal (the tracks) it must weigh a tidy bit.Excellent job mate, that should go down well at the club meet or rather it wont with certain people.I think it will do well at our show as well.[tup][tup]

All I can say is “Outstanding”!!! [#toast][bow]
