Kurile airfield runway materials

As I stumble towards completion of my 1/144 Minicraft Betty torpedo bomber (this has not been a fun build), I’m starting to think about a display base, specifically one of Japan’s Paramushiro bases on the Kurile Islands in 1942-43.

Would the dispersal areas have been paved, if so with what, or just grass/dirt/mud?

Since the Kurile Islands are pretty similar to the Aleutians, I’d say gravel would be a pretty safe bet.

Didn’t those islands consist of volcanic rock and coral?I’d go with gravel and dirt.

But I don’t have any pics.

Gravel … duhhhhhhhhhhh. And me addicted to thinking in terms of PSP and whatnot.

So what would be a suitable material to represent gravel in 1/144? Model railroad ballast, maybe? I’ve done static grass and plastic PSP for bases, but this is a new one for me.

You’d want the finest ballast that you can get you’re hands on otherwise it will look out of scale. You may even using sand and spraying it a gravel color after it’s affixed to the base.

Ask for ballast for N gauge, as that is the model railway equivalent to 1/144.
