very good work. Its fun to watch the day to day progress.
New picture today

I put a couple of soldiers next to the drivers to give you an idea of the size of this kit.
the sanding lines were a pain to attach, that has been the hardest part of this kit
That is one enormous model. What are your plans for it when you’re done? Will it have a set of cars behind it? Keep the updates coming, I can’t imagine ever building one of these myself, but it will be a pleasure to see someone complete one.
Thats impressive .
I am curious what you are planning on doing with it as well ?
the thing is huge.
I am going to get one of these soon ,hopefully they will come out with a line of defense cars as well to go with it
Excellent progress. This thing came together very quickly. Can’t wait to see where you take it from here.
I am going to build a whole train, I have all of the Dragon rail kits also the Trumpeter rail kits, my ultimate goal is to build a scene unloading the Karl with anti aircraft guns and support troops, mabey parrallel tracks to place the flats, and gondolas loaded with armor and munations. a grand endavor.
but time will tell, I have to relocate from Ohio to Califorina in the next few months , so my build time is going to be liminted in a few months.
Amazing work Sherm.
I’d been thinking about something similar, although I doubt I’ll ever have the time to build it.
I planned on a narrow, high shelf about 10-12 feet long in my basement, just wide enough for the tracks and railbed. This way, it’s up, out of the way, but still in full view.
I had intended to do a convoy diorama in 1/35 the same way, with a half-street and building faces.
Jeff
Now THAT would be a unique way to display something like this. I like the convoy idea as well. My next big endeavor on the display front may be to turn one of my plain wooden shelves into one large tarmac or carrier deck for all my completed helos and planes…
Sherm, I hope your move goes smoothly and it doesn’t take you away from this incredible build for too long.
Sherman111, That is one nice looking Decapod. Try www.walthers.com for gauges, and piping and the crew. I know that Preiser makes figures and Verlinden has announced a crew in resin. Also, remember, when weathering the locomotive to include alkali build up as steam locomotives were notorious for that
Ch[}:)]
This is gonna look beautiful. I’m thinking about one myself.
Of course knowing me…I’d have [}:)] to wreck it.
Ja! goot work! [tup]
Thats it…I’m getting one…heck why not …I’m almost done with Trumpetrers 1/35 Chinook…I love BIG kits!!
Trumpeter my not always do thier homework…but the parts fit nicely and no flash!
I wonder how they did on this kit…accuracy wise?
From what info I was able to collect on this engine, it is pretty close. Auto oiler lines are missing, steam lines need to be jacketed, I took thread and wraped lines to simulate. air brake lines could have been made from poly tubing, rather than molded plastic. Other than that it has been a fun kit to build, I am going to buy another to build at a later time , hopefully by that time some aftermarket addons will be out there.
Excellent progress so far, Sherman111. I just purchased one from Great models. I read the review on it. The author said that the use of brass tubing could be used to replace the molded ones. Can’t wait to see the finished model. If you don’t mind, could you give us your pro’s and con’s of this model. I hope your back heals with no issues.
Regards,
Mark
Been a while scince I posted , been packing and back has been hurting hope to work on him this weekend, ready to seal paint and start weathering, just got a new airbrush from Airbrush City a capital 2006GF hope it works good.
The display you have planned should be interesting. Add me to the delusional diorama list. I’ve been planing a large display dio, about 4 feet by 2-3 feet, of a brief train stop in the country somewhere, with troops loading cargo, the big Karl sitting in the background.
Check out the Railroad side of the hobby house.
There is a railroad "gage’ close to 1/32 and I believe figures are available.
I’m not sure what the requirement was for the loco in 19943-45 but in the US it was standard to have 3-4 in a cab.
1 - Engineer
1 - Brakeman (often function like a co-engineer)
1 or 2 - Firemen. These were steam and it took a fair ammount of shoveling to keep it moving with a big load.
The 52’s were not especially fuel efficient but were easier to make than the 50’s.
A nice conversion would be armor on the sides (the old CMK kit had wooden armor) - some may have carried a full set.
Also, there were at leat 3 types of tenders including a condensing type that recylced the water vapor in the steam.
You could alos paint it in Post-War colors as France, Germany, much of central Europe used these locomotives. A lot were built and a lot survived. I saw a picture of one still in use in the then GDR as late as 1980.
Sherman111: Have a look at these:

These are I scale in model railroading from the company Preiser. They are 1/32 scale and a close match to 1:35. Hope this helps!
