There is not one I am aware of and I am in. I was just thinking one would be a good idea when I picked up Tamiya’s Pershing today. I have a few kits to choose from.

Tamiya’s kit builds into a WW2 version. Armorama has one that is ongoing until May 05: http://www.armorama.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Campaigns&file=index&req=showcontent&id=36

Any idea of what corrections I would need to do to make it a Korean version? They do have the decals for one. Would it be just the tracks?

I have the Tamiya M26 Pershing sitting in my closet., so you can count me in! According to the kit you can do either the WW2 version or Korean.
So what’s the deal with this kit not being accurate for a Korean version? Can I get some clarification please? [?]

I thought this kit could be built as a Korean War tank? I guess I need to do some better research. I’d be interested in a Korean War GB. I have a couple of Pershings and some other kits.

Based on the Pershing / Patton in Action book by Squadron, many of the left over M26’s were deployed to Korea. When WW2 ended, the miltary had massive cutbacks. Many of the M26 Pershings were relegated to “gate duty”, or as “Mermorials” in static displays or put into “storage”. When the Korean War broke out, the ROK (Republic of Korea) military forces were completely overrun by the North Korean T34s. The ROK had no tanks nor any effective anti-tank capabilities. Initially, 3 M26 Pershings were yanked from the American Garrison in Japan to help the American forces when we rushed to their aid. Unforttunately, due to the long storage the fan belts had worn out and there were no suitable replacements. They tried to improvise, but the make due fan belts quickly stretched and the tanks quickly over heated and broke down during the retreat to Puson, forcing them to be abandoned.

4 Tank Battalions were quickly mobilized and they litterally had to scrounge Pershing Tanks from Fort Knox and other places that Pershings that had been either put into storage, or used as monuments. Ironically, the Marines were the first to use the Pershings successfully against the T34s, thus destroying their myth of “invincibility”.

Soooo… based on that information, There were M26 Pershings in service in the Korean Theater that directly came from the leftover Pershings from Amored units that served in WW2.

I meant to include this in the other post. The Tamiya 1/35 M26 Pershing includes decals for
Company B, 1st Tank Bttn., U.S. Marine as it appeared at Inchon 1950, in addition to markings for three other units that served in the European Theater in 1945

When are we talking about. Couldn’t possibly do anything before late fall/winter. And thats as close to a ‘no’ as you’re going to get from me!! BTW, what other vehicles besides the Pershing would be appropriate?

Check out this site http://korea50.army.mil/history/factsheets/kw_armor.shtml there are a bunch of tanks listed there that were used in the Korean war.

Off hand, Chaffee, Shermans and M-46s are all good for the US. I believe the NKs had T-35/85s. Not a comprehensive list, but some of the biggies

I might do a diorama for this one, with a knocked out T34/85 and a victorious Marine M-26. [8D]

Are there any decal sets for the Tamiya Pershing available out there from it’s service in Korea?

Anthony, Thanks for the link. Thats a nice little recap.

would a sherman HVSS work?

I think most of the Shermans were the Easy Eights (although there were M4A3 dozers and M4A3 105mm Dozers), so that would work. Dragon does one M4A3E8 for the Korean War. It’s hard to find but occasionally pops up on ebay

They also make an M-46. Italeri makes a Chaffee (6431), which has decals for 1 Korean war Chaffee US Army 3rd ID, 1951)and both Tamiya and Dragon make the M-26(T26E3). Dragon makes the M-26A1 (kit no. 6801). with decal options for 1 Korean war tank (Company B, 1st Marine Tank Battalion, Hamhung 1950). Tamiya’s kit includes decals for 1 Korean war version, same company and battalion). but I am unsure yet what makes it only a WWII version

Based on the info I have from the Pershing in Action book, the kit should be accurate for a Korean version. Most of the Pershings that went to Korea had formerly been in US Army units in Europe so as far as I can tell, there is no reason why the Tamiya kit won’t work.

Rob Gronovius, can you clarify your statement on the Tamiya kit not being suitable for a Korean version? Is there something we’re not aware of? Thanks in advance. [:)]

I was told by Claymore the travel lock on the Tamiya kit is for an early T-26 but includes the interphone, which would be appropriate for Korea only. He also said there are 2 types of sprockets/tracks(,T80E1/T84E1 tracks and the T81 tracks) but aside from the travel locks, thought it would work OOB.

Here is a nice set of pics for the M-26

Why don’t we get this big and include the AC guys? I mean, come on, what was the Korean War without MiG-15’s and F-86’s?

Never said the M26 did not serve in Korea. The Tamiya kit OOB is not quite proper. It is more accurately a T26E3, one of the earlier Pershing tanks from the first batch that was sent to Europe in 1945.

Remember, just because a manufacturer provides decals for a particular variant in the box doesn’t mean it is necessarily correct. DML’s M26A1 and M46 would be better for a Korean War variant, but it’s your kit and your build, build for yourself.

Most any type of M4A3 either VVSS or HVSS would be ok for Korea. Dragon’s M4A3E8 or M4A3 HVSS POA-CWS-H5 would be great kits for this time frame as well.
