After many years off, I walked into an old hobby shop and was transcended back 35 years to images of my very first model, a Messerschmitt, 1/72 scale. That’s all it took. Now I find every excuse to go visit all the hobby shops around the Ryukyu chain in search of interesting planes, warships and masted schooners, armour, figurines, Japanese sci-fi, steam trains, old sports convertibles, HINO/FUSA scale industrial trucks, etc. It’s a blast. I’ve amassed over 200 models in a little over four months; and am waiting by the newstand for this months issue of FSM. Here and in Japan, many of the plastic model kits are not sealed in wrappers; some are tied close with string but rarely ever wrapped, so the shopper can take a look inside. Again, its a blast, I’m addicted. Sayonnara, swon
Some addictions are much more pleasant than others. Welcome to FSM swon and welcome back to the wonderful world of modelling.
Welcome to FSM Forums Swon. We share something, already! My first model was a Bf-109 too. Airfix’s. What a mess I made of that… I hope you enjoy it here and I look forward to reading more from you soon again!

Hi ya swon …
Welcome to the FSM Community Modeling Forum(s) ! [:)]
It sounds like you have come back to the hobby in a big way … all that buying … has it left any time for building … ??? A little over 1 kit a day … for the past 4 months … that’s pretty good collecting … but then on the other hand … you have 35 years to make up for … good luck, have fun … and again … welcome! [^]
Welcome aboard swon!!
Wow…200 models in 4 months. That’s quite the collection in a short amount of time. [:)] Now here’s the tough question…out of those 200, how many have you started? [;)]
Welcome back to the addiction hobby!!
Swon,
I will be visiting Okinawa (Kadena) soon and am wondering if you could supply me with names and addresses of Hobby Shops on Okinawa that I can visit on my off time?
Welcome to the FSM Forums [#welcome]. Glad you’re here.
Regards, Rick
Welcome to the gang…
Hi USNChief (Lauren): Glad to be of service to you. There are several pretty nicely stocked hobby shops on Okinawa. Near Kadena you have two bicycle shops that sell kits and paints, there’s two more shops (Shima’s and Frank’s) on the mountain top above USMC Butler just across the street from Futenma Housing gate (not Futenma MCAS), and then there’s a few others. You can call me at DSN 644-5863 during the weekdays, and I might be better able to explain to you where things are at. Take care, until then…itte shai. swon
Konnichiwa from Osaka! Welcome to FSM (two years late!).
Sorry for the late welcome, must have missed your post the first time around!
So, if you had accumulated over 200 models in your first four months in Okinawa, and that was back in June of 2003, what’s your count up to now?
Hi swon! This is an awesome forum. Feel free to ask about anything modelling. Usually the guys have some form of advice. Once again welcome.[#welcome]
Shima’s (if that’s the one toward the top of the hill, I just called it THE Hobby Shop) is the best that I ran across on the island during my three years there. I’d find any excuse to stop in there, and just mentally add things to the “gotta get” list. Great store, and there always seemed to be somthing new.

Welcome to the fold , yo uwill find much help and make dear friends here as I have …, enjoy [:D]
Hey J-Hulk, if you’re still here on the rock, then I apologize for the time it has taken for me to reply. Been busy, for several years. The “Collection” is up and pass 2000. I should have created a dBase to keep track of things, but rather spent more time collecting, building. If you’re here, you should know one of the bike hobby shops folder and the other reduced its stock by one-half. Top Gun in Tomari, which was really well stocked with japanese and european eastern bloc kits folded too. Ban ban in Nago folded. Yikes, we only have Shima’s, Franks (folding), Yonkundo, and the Yonabaru shop left. The Ban ban near Courtney is only gun dam robot stuff. Take care. New code name is “dogbone”. Ruff ruff!
