Kolja's Prowler

Hey Karl, Your Prowler is really looking goood!!! When were you in -137? I was a pr in -132 from 89-92. We had lots of fun on the Saratoga![;)] What do you do in Fallon? That was my last duty station ( a pr in supply)[banghead] But it sure beat being haze gray and underway. Keep us posted on how you come along with her. She’s looking great!!! For those looking for reference photos go the VAQ squadrons’ web pages and check in with the PAO! Good luck fellas!

All I have to say is even though I’m not much on the queer birds seeing as I worked on the A-6 for 15 years, your EA-6B is looking awesome KUDOS. I’m a retired AMHC and still have a soft spot for Grumman Ironworks I served from 1982 to 2002 in squadrons VA-42,VA-34,VA-36, then ended up on A-4’s lastly working on the Hornet.Think its time to open my Intruder and start work. Anyway again awesome job on that Prowler…more pics

I was in 137 from April 2001 to Jan. 2005. Now, I’m an air wing instructor in the Strike Department at NSAWC (and up to my eyeballs in an air wing)

I got one for ya! www.midwaysailor.com/error404.html

Good luck in Strike! Don’t you just love it when a CAG comes in?! I hope everything works out good for you in Fallon. I had an Air Force major ask me once why the Navy had a base in Nevada, I told him we were planning ahead for when Ca. has a major quake and all we would have to build is the docks![;)]

Almost as good as the handful of surface warriors and submariners on staff who are wondering how the hell they ended up in Nevada, surrounded by pickle suits of dubious maturity…[:o)]

Here it is with a preliminary coat of gray (you could say primer, though it’s just the same light ghost gray I’ll spray again soon), which I sprayed to check the surface flaws after all the scribing, adding resin, etc. So, looking close will show where I’ve done a bit more filling and sanding to touch things up. Also sprayed the rudder white for the circa 1998 VAQ-137 scheme I’m doing.

Thought I’d let everyone know I’m still hacking away. Got the first shade of gray down , but have run into some trouble with the second shade. There’s been a few bouts of spray, utter profanity, sand, dismantle airbrush, respray, utter more profanity, sand some more…

Long story short, I’m out of Dark Ghost Gray [B)]

So while I wait for the UPS man to bring more (no LHS here, and shipping is actually cheaper than the gas for a quick round-trip to Reno), I’ll have plenty of time to let everything cure, thoroughly sand down the offending areas, and troubleshoot the airbrush!

Any body with VQ-2 or VA 128? Those were my dads squadrons. Was on the saratoga, and the eisenhower, and others. Wish the A-6 was still around, then I’d take the commision with the guaranted flight school that the Marines and Navy have been offering me. Take care.

Hey! Y’all sitting down? I finally accomplished something photo-worthy!
Major painting is done - tonight I sprayed the medium gray (ironically enough, after my ordeal with the dark ghost gray during which I went through almost 3 bottles, THIS time I actually mixed up too much paint!!!)

The contrast DOES look a little harsh, but it’s under a flourescent drafting lamp and there’s been no weathering or anything like that.

Some touch up work to do (around ladders, intakes, wingfolds), plus “red” areas and the speedbrakes, which are supposed to be white, but I forgot to paint.

Maybe, just maybe, I’ll be spraying Future early next week (I want to do all the decals before any of the other details, like antennae, canopies and the rest of the wingfold go on).

I for one have been looking forward to this build seeing as the A-6 errr EA-6b airframe strikes a note with me …awesome job. What are your plans for jury struts?

Scott

I actually wasn’t planning on them - eventually I’ll put the model on a base that looks like a flight deck. My former squadron didn’t use the struts topside very much at all (unless we were doing a port visit or had lots of no-fly days in a row). Other than that, I usually only saw them being used when a plane was down in the hangar deck, not topside between sorties or overnight.

Hey Karl,

I’ve been wondering when we would be hearing from you! Nice to have you back. Your Prowler is really looking good!!! Looks like pretty soon she won’t be a hanger queen anymore. Keep up the good work and keep us posted.

Fallon omg I hated that place the Golden Nugget took all my money when I ran the line shack we always used struts well that was until they refitted with plastic wings then we broke so many wing fold fairings it was rediculas anyway awesome work Karl again KUDOS.

Scott

Not exactly dramatic progress here, but some nonetheless. I’m done touch-up painting, including the red areas exposed by the open boarding platforms (under the front cockpit). I’ve also painted the area beneath the flaperons on the outboard wings red (when the wings are folded, the flaperons on the outer wings tend to droop a bit, exposing red) - unfortunately you can’t see it in this picture because I’ve got them upside down while the undersides dry! Also, the wingtip speedbrakes are white (I forgot to do that when I was doing the landing gear wells and whatnot). The canopy framing is done - black first (the interior color) then medium gray. I prefer to do this by hand in 1/48 scale.

Finally, hopefully you can make out the more or less glossy finish. I finally had the chance to spray future (nowhere near as soon as I’d hoped, obviously). When I get back from a few days on the road for work this week it should be all cured enough for decals.

This is a build we’ve all been waiting to see come together. Excellent work! [tup]

Thanks! I hope to get some decals on this weekend. We’ll see how my other projects/chores around the house progress!!

Decals done. Now onto the small stuff and weathering:

Looking very good O’ Enlighted One… Can’t wait to see the finished bird.

Lookin’ great Kolja. I’m envious. It makes want to start mine.Good work.I can’t wait to see pics of it displayed.
