Hello. I know this must sound like something out of Dumb and Dumber, but I sprayed half part Tamiya thinner and Tamiya clear (gloss) on my Sherman in preparation for applying decals. I think that job turned out OK. But then I got greedy, and tried to paint a second model (a Tamiya Panzer IV) dunkelgelb in the same session, and I didn’t have the common sense to move my Sherman farther away (take it inside for safe keeping). I majorly oversprayed the Panzer IV (too much wet paint that took minutes to dry). And worse, tiny yellow specks/tint settled on the Sherman (ruining its appearance). So my question becomes, can I re-airbrush acrylic olive drab over the glossy coat (and then recoat with a new glossy coat)? Or will acrylic not adhere well to a glossy coat? Thanks for advising. I try to laugh about this and tell myself that I am learning from this (completely preventable) mistake that I should not have made…
I’m sure you can,but if your worried you can flat coat 1st
I’ve reshot acrylic over gloss coats many times fwiw. I generally give the gloss a little scuffing with a little 2x2" 3000 grit soft pad or 000 or 0000 steel wool first. But at any rate the acrylic stuck fine. Accidents happen, don’t beat yourself up.
should work fine. accidents happpen.[sn0ps]
Want to hear a real disaster ? How about a three year old who decides to glue a Testors orange tube glue cap to a a finished model destined for a show in two days !! Been there done that. You can’t get a better target than that nice long shiny enamel painted roof of a 1939 Ford sedan to glue a tube cap to after all. And there is that still small voice in the back of your head that says you can’t kill this kid.
Oh my gosh, oldermodelguy, that really was a hobby disaster! How frustrating that must have been with all of the effort and time you must have put into building the model and for it to be marred at the last second before the show like that… Laughing with you, and thanks for giving me some healthy perspective on my own hobby setbacks. A lot of friendly/helpful folks on this forum: thanks all for advising me on the airbrushing acrylic over glossy coat (and for giving some empathy and encouragement to a fellow hobbyist).
Amen ! It’s a great place to share and learn too.
I don’t think this is anything to worry about you should be fine. As someone already mentioned the 3000 grit is the probably the best method. You have the right attitude just laugh it off.
I keep a lighter on the bench to remove crazy glue residue off my applicators. Sewing needles, the glue looper, and tiny wire. I once glued a photo etch part to a plastic bulkhead assembly. I got a glue smudge on the PE that looked awful. I figured no problem I’ll just use the lighter to burn it off. Completly forgetting it’s glued to plastic. The entire assembly melted and I just laughed over this insanely stupid move. I’m sure all of us at one time or another is guilty of such dumb things.
