Kits to hone your skills

Some kits are really good for helping you learn and hone your skills regarding different aspects of modeling. For me, when I built the Enterprise Bridge in the 90’s, I got a lot of decal experience regarding gloss coats before applying the decals, and moving them into place using a pencil eraser as well as using decal solutions like solveset and decal set / sol. For using a pin vice and Tamia Handy Drill, I have found 1/24 & 1/25th scale car exaust pipes a great way to learn centering skills. Anyone else have something to share regarding types of kits to learn from?

Hi!

Yeah!

I would have to say the simpler kits from Life-Like-Lindberg! They are simple enough to build. Plus, you learn How to handle things like yards and Booms that are Fragile and NOT roubd like they should be,Good practice for sanding and shaping what’s there.Even the simpler Mororized ones, Not the Model ,the type, Like the Shrimp Boat.P.T. etc.

Also you can learn how much molded on detail to remove to make them look better like plank lines etc…There’s many out there, you just have to choose what’s best for your learning curve.I’ve seen some really good Model Ships and Planes be ruined by raised lines where there shouldn’t, be or just the opposite, Grooves where in scale ya wouldn’t see them anyway!
