Kits and Decals for Illinois ANG

Hey folks, wondering if you guys can help. I am trying to put together a model of each aircraft used by the 182nd airlift wing down in Peoria Illinois (my home town). I have decided to do them all in 1/48th scale. I am going to need a F-51 mustang, F-84f, O-2skymaster, A-37, F-16 adf, and C-130 H. I have already picked up the O-2, and C-130 (big kit). I have found decals for the F-84 and the F-16 and these are the kits i have questions about.

for the f-84 i’m useing aeromaster decals and they say that they are intended for the monogram F-84f kit. Do you guys know anything about this kit? Who is making it these days, pros/cons?

for the f-16 superscale decals have the proper markings for this squadron. They are for the Hasegawa kit but it is my understanding that only Revell makes a ADF kit out of the box. So my question here is pros/cons for each kit and how hard is it to convert the hasegawa into an ADF version of the F-16. My understanding the only external diffrences between the f-16a block 15 and the ADF is a couple of antanna and the spot light.

thanks for any help

Cheers

Joe

The 1/48 Monogram F-84F kit is an excellent model. The cockpit is very detailed as is the outside. It has raised panel lines that have a few small errors in location. The overall shape is very slightly in error in a couple of places, but you have to be a real nit-picker to notice the difference.

These markings are on Aeromaster sheet # 48 728

This is Aeromaster sheet # 48-727 with markings for an IL and MO ANG birds.

I believe the Academy KC-97L were included IANG markings.

yeah the KC-97 was flown by the guys up in Rockford IL, they fly KC-135 these days. They have always been an air refueling wing up there and I think those are the only two aircraft they have ever had. Though they may have started with the KC-97 without the two jets, then upgraded later.

Cool news on the monogram F-84. I’ll hunt that one down and pick i up. How about the f-16?

The 126th Bomb Wing was initially located at Midway Airport in 1950 flying B-26 Invaders and flew these aircraft during the Korean War. They returned to Midway in 1953 and flew B-26, then F-51, then F-84 and then F-86 aircraft. In 1954 they moved to O’Hare as the 126 BW.

The refueling era began in 1961 with receipt of the KC-97L tankers, converted to the KC-135A in 1976 and to the KC-135E in 1983 through the end of the wing’s service at O’Hare in 1999.

July 1999 the last KC-135E was transferred to Scott AFB, IL, and the wing converted to the KC-135R in 2008 & 2009.

The 126th ARW has participated in every major conflict since Korea.

Cool info, I’m not as up to date on my information on that squad. I’m modeling the 182nd airlift wing out of Peoria Illinois. They currently fly the C-130H. The kit i’m most looking foward to making is the A-37 dragonfly. They flew it from the late 70s to the early 90s and most of that time they were painted in Euro1 camo. A paint scheme that i haven’t seen many models of the dragonfly painted in.

I was born in Peoria’s St Francis hospital and lived in Morton from then until a year and a half after high school graduation. My uncle and aunt used to take me over to the Peoria airport to watch the airplanes, which at the time were the F-51 and then F-84F. I can remember watching the Thunderbirds perform at Peoria in the straight wing F-84G and then the swept wing F-84F.

Keep an eye on Ebay for the Monogram kit… In fact, ya better hurry…

My dad used to take my brother and I to the end of the runway on guard weekends and we’d sit on the hood of the car watching the F-16s do touch and goes, one of my favorite childhood memories.

Good way to get to see the inside of a police car nowadays…

Hi all,

Found this post and I am also trying to do the same thing as smith248. I just got back into building models again now that I have room for it. I served in the 182nd ANG when they had the A37, F-16, C-26, and C130s and I started my project with the goal of building these. I’m also going to build the p-51, O-2skymaster, and F-84 since I love those planes. Does anyone know where I can get decals for the P-51, O-2, and C-130?

Also, what’s the best kit for a C-130E/H 1/48 kit?

Thanks

I think that the Testor’s/Italeri kit of the C-130 is the only thing available in 1/48.
