Kit - 20.00 - Aftermarket sets 80.00 - Living in dog house...priceless!

Please tell me that I’m not the only person who has spent 50.00 to 150.00 dollars on ‘aftermarket’ goodies for one single project?

She will be worth it in 1/48 scale. B24-J

know how you feel Papa , my firt phantom in 1/32 = £53 , pe stuff £12 , paints £5 , a set of oop yellowhammer decals £85 [:O][(-D][(-D][(-D]

That is VERY easy to do. I try to limit my AM expenses to no more than the price of the kit. I also usually practice a personal challenge to do the best I possibly can with what comes in the box. Anything out of the spares box or scratch built is fine. Sometimes I use a resin cockpit if the kit version is too bad.

Dog house you say!!! Naaah!!! She’ll get over it. Remind her there’s worse things you could do with your money. I mean, C’mon… you could be at Hooters with your buddies drinkin brewskies. Which reminds me…gotta go!!!

That’s been one of my pet peeves of late. Pay $40 to $50 on a twin engined medium bomber and then fork over another $40 to $50 for AM photo etch and decals. Seems to me that for that kind of model should either A. Not require any AM products other than glue and paint or B. Have the PE and decals included in the kit. (Heck for that kind of money I should be able to pour the glue and paint into the box, shake the box, throw the contents towards the bench and after it bounces, it’s fully assembled and a contest winner)

LOL

I don’t think I’ve ever spent that much, but have easily doubled the price of the kit a few times.

Regards, Rick

So you gotta ask yourself…am I happy? …yes you are! So what if you’ve got to subsist on Kibbles&bits for awhile?

Steve

Yeaaa, but that would take all the fun out of building. Any six footed clutz could do that.
Real artists, read that modelers, should be appreciated for their skill and dedication to the science and art of the preservation of aircraft species, (substitute boat, car, train, etc).

I like to do a combo…aftermarket and scratch build.

I just don’t have the time or the energy to do ALL scratch…so the aftermarket stuff is kinda nice.

I plan on using a lot of bare metal foil with the 1/48 B-24J seems like the best way to go for the best real look.

Hey Dragonfly… your right!.. oh yeah…seeya there! your buying!

Lets see, right now I have $47.50 in after market and another $28 in AM on order for one kit. The cost of the kit…$9.75…so I guess it needs a lot of help. So I guess my short answer is yes.

Man, I’m glad I have a wife that quilts…Have you check into how much it cost to put one of those puppies together? [:)]

Yep.

ALL of my helos get updates now. I’ve gotten past the ability to build a model OOB! I’ve got a 1/72 Hasegawa AV-8B that I haven’t built simply because I don’t know how to just build the damn kit at this point! I keep looking for what needs to be improved, corrected, updated, etc. Its a sickness. One I’m content with, but a sickness nonetheless.

The kit I’m currently working on, the MRC 1/35 OH-58D just got a full Cutting Edge update which cost as much as the kit did. That, coupled with the brass rod for the new skid struts, the AR-15 weapons set for the two M-4 Carbines and spare magazines and whatever extra sheet styrene I’ve used, the AM stuff has far outstripped the cost of the kit!

$50 on a CH-46E…$50 on CH-46E PE…and $40.00 for some resin bits…yeah I know where you’re coming from…except the doghouse part…I have seperate accounts, and a seperate stash of “rainy day” cash!! lol

[#ditto][#ditto]…me too[:D]

I remember the very first time that I ordered a PE set.
The kit was 5.90 € (Academy’s 1/72 Dragonfly) when the PE arrived it was 40 €…funny thing is, the actual price of the PE was only about 9 $, all the rest was postage and TAXES (a hint ; if you ever sent something to a Belgian modeling buddy, state on your shipping that is a GIFT (even if that isn’t true)).

Kit36 Your Ch46-E list looks like mine.

I just recieved the second Eduard exterior set from Great Models today…man that outfit is good!

Actually…I sale some kits on eebay to build up my paypal account…GREAT MODELS lets you use your paypal there! GOOD PRICES and FAST SHIPPING!
unlike Squadron where many items seem to be always OUT OF STOCK.

I bought from squadron one time and the total bill was $150 before shipping… the kit was Tamiyas P-51D… the rest was everything under the sun that I could ca to it, plus decals for Bodney

Thats life, relationships and modelling!!! Bit boring otherwise, without the traumas!!

What’s OOB? I just can’t seem to do that anymore.

I bought Revell’s tiny Fw190 A8 in 1/72 last year for £3.50, or $6.50, I then spent:

Decals £7.50/$14.00
Cockpit £6.00/$11.50
PE £3.00/$5.00
Wheels £2.50/$4.75

So I managed to spend 5 and a half times more on the extras, than I did on the kit!!!

But I did enjoy it all![:D]

After all it kept me busy for the best part of 6 weeks.

I know the feeling Papa-Echo. Recently ‘had’ to purchase a $200.- digital camera and upgrade the home pc system to ‘continue’ my modeling fix. Figure I can amortize the cost over all the models/group builds the next few years and the camera & pc were for the family…yeah, that’s the ticket…

that’s like 1/3 the price of a pair of designer shoes, or 1/10 of an LV bag. but my advice is don’t counter with that argument unless you want her to keep you in the doghouse.
